Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-14-2020

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, May 14, 1920:

Construction of a sport stadium at Two Hundred and Twenty-fifth street and Broadway which will have a seating capacity of 30,000 was begun [yesterday].

The enclosure will have a six-lap bicycle track, and also will contain a cinder patch for track events. Work on the stadium is being rushed, the owners said, to permit its use for the final tryouts for bicycle racers who will represent the United States at the Olympic games.

This is in Marble Hill, just across the river from Manhattan Island. The Yankees had been talking about building a stadium on this site for about a decade, but it obviously didn’t happen for them. I don’t even think this stadium happened, though I admit I haven’t done exhaustive research.

Things turned out okay for New York’s American League club, even if it was still stranded at the Polo Grounds for a couple more years.

Just now on Lebatard's show Kurkjian said he was axed a trivia question at a party and couldn't get to sleep until he got all of them:
14 players with 4 or fewer letters in their last name hit 40 or more homers in a season
here are the starting letters (I never in a million years would have gotten either of the P's)

Did Carlos or Derrek Lee ever do it? I'd feel like a nitwit if they had and I didn't guess them.

I'm literally going through the alphabet, thinking of letters that can come after P, then letters that can come after that.

Wally Post?

Apologies to Sadaharu, Seunghwan Oh was the only two letter player I could find in MLB, a pitcher who has gone 0-2. Not that I know how to make sure he's the only one.

If you want to find 2-letter names just search BB-ref by "Birthplace: Taiwan".

Chin-Lung Hu, the Dodgers shortstop of the recent past had 2 MLB homers. The others are all pitchers.

On the birthday team, I would say that WAR severely understates Bob Thurman's ability. While (per his SABR bio) he did play some semi-pro before WWII, he didn't get into professional ball until he was 29, joining the Homestead Grays in 1946. He joined the Reds as a 38 year old rookie in 1955, had very good numbers as a part-timer and pinch hitter in 1956 and 57.

Double whammy of the big war and segregation.
