Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-19-2021

Grand Forks Herald, May 19, 1921:

Reports from the east…are to the effect that Abe Attell, former featherweight champion, is about to tell all he knows of the 1919 world’s series scandal. Attell is making overtures to State’s Attorney R.S. Crowe to turn state’s evidence…

William Burns, former major league player, who is said to have acted as the “go-between” for the gamblers and baseball players named in the indictments…is said to be a frequent visitor to the offices of Judge Barrett, and has explained all he knows of the alleged “fixing” of the 1919 series.

That’s the catch with criminal conspiracies; they generally rely on people who are looking out for themselves first.

Curt Simmons, the last surviving Whiz Kid. His getting called into National Guard duty in September 1950 damaged the Phillies in the World Series. His performance for the 1964 Cardinals helped cost the Phils the pennant.

Birthday exhibition pitcher: the Pirates had an open Sunday in 1924, and set up a game with the team of Kingston, NY. Kingston pitcher Bud Culloton held the Pirates scoreless through nine, finally losing 2-0 in ten innings. When the Pirates left town they took Culloton with them. His official record is limited to 24.2 innings in 1925-26, but it seems he traveled with the team and pitched batting practice and exhibitions. The Pirates returned to Kingston in 1927, and Culloton stopped them, 6-1.

C: Rick Cerone (8.1 WAR)

more than half of that WAR (4.2) came in 1980 w/ the Yankees. Bill James says he holds the record for "longest career milked out of one good season"

Was the thinking behind the DeCinces-Disco Danny trade that Ripken would take over 3rd base? 'Cause it didn't make much sense...Ford didn't seem like a Weaver-type of player. Mediocre defensively, average power and batting eye. Just a guy you could replace with a platoon.

#5 Yes. Everybody in the organization (including Weaver when he first saw him) thought Ripken was too big and lacked the quickness to play SS. And lacked the agility to handle second.

And to be fair, it really wasn't obvious that Ripken could handle the position.

Toss in "Not that one - 1910's Jim Hickman" and "Pitching prospect - Deivi Garcia".
