Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-27-2020

Toledo News-Bee, May 27, 1920:

Pat Duncan pulled a prize stunt Wednesday. As a result the Reds lost to the Cards 10 to 8.

Cincinnati tied the score in the first of the eighth. The Cards came in in their half, and Stock tripled. Hornsby singled to left and the ball got away from Duncan. Instead of chasing it, Pat must have thought it was the last of the ninth, and dashed for the club house, thinking the game over.

They had to chase after Pat and call him back to finish the game.

I couldn’t believe this actually happened, but it sure seems like it did. From the BBRef play-by-play:STL Rogers Hornsby Hod Eller Single to LF; Stock Scores; Hornsby Scores/Adv on E7/No RBI

Single and a three-base error, presumably. As far as I know, there’s no code for “dude just ran off the field in the middle of the play.”

A huge logjam at first base today. Jeff Bagwell played right field once, and even though it sort of feels like cheating to put him out there, it can't possibly be a worse idea than the Mets putting Todd Hundley in left field.

C: Frank Snyder (17.5 WAR)
1B: Frank Thomas (73.8 WAR)
2B: Yoan Moncada (7.3 WAR)
3B/Manager: Pinky Higgins (25.5 WAR)
SS: Mike Caruso (0.8 WAR)
LF: Jacob Brumfield (1.7 WAR)
CF: Terry Moore (20.8 WAR)
RF: Jeff Bagwell (79.9 WAR)

SP: Gary Nolan (25.9 WAR)
SP: Miguel Gonzalez (10.2 WAR)
SP: Garrett Richards (7.3 WAR)
SP: Jose Berrios (7.1 WAR)
SP: Ross Baumgarten (5.1 WAR)
RP: Mark Clear (7.8 WAR)

Third 1B, would start on most Birthday Teams: John Jaha (12.4 WAR)
Backup C, not an outfielder: Todd Hundley (10.9 WAR)
Fun Name: Brad Boxberger

We're just a third baseman away from having an all-White Sox infield. Maybe Ross Baumgarten can step in.

On Cameo, you can pay baseball stars to deliver custom video messages.

I find this fascinating. Big Papi is the most expensive, at $541. Bo Jackson is $400. Joe Madden is $350, but Terry Francona is only $100. Kenny Lofton is $65, the same price as Junior Spivey. Roberto Alomar is $100. So is Tyler Wade! Batting Stance Guy is a huge bargain at $15, and yes, he does batting stances. Slade Heathcott is a mere $5.

Other tantalizing options include:

Pete Rose, $150
Steve Garvey, $125
Lenny Dykstra, $95
Suzyn Waldman, $45

You can actually view all of the videos, so if you're curious who is paying Junior Spivey $65 to record a 30 second video, you can find out.

A player in 2019 became the only one in history to play at least 20 games at 2B, 3B, SS, and LF. Also, only one player has played 20+ at 2B, 3B, SS, and CF, and only one at 2B, 3B, SS, and RF. Both of those happened since 2014. Can someone name any of these players?

I think we should let the Birthday League have the DH this year.

Hmmm...

2019: Kike Hernandez
2014 (CF): Brock Holt
2014 (RF): Ben Zobrist

Marwin Gonzalez for 2019?

Rey Ordonez ($49) is more than Endy Chavez ($30).

Steve Garvey, $125

Didn't Manny Ramirez catch a ball and toss it to a fan, thinking it was the 3rd out? So Dunc confused the number of the inning rather than the number of outs; just Duncan being Duncan.

Tommy Edman?

EDIT: Shows how well I know my Cardinals; Edman played 0 games at SS.

You really have to wonder how this can possibly be worth the time for Mr. Heathcott. After the service takes their cut, he's probably making like $3 a pop. But it's not like he's going to be rolling in requests - he's a niche choice in an already niche market. I can't imagine he's making more than like $15 bucks a month at this. I don't know, maybe that's a lot for a "pilot, serial hobbiest, social entrepreneur, and motivational speaker."

Presumably someone who is only "serial hobbier" would cost less.

No right answers so far. Hints: The 2B-3B-SS-LF guy played in the AL West, the 2B-3B-SS-CF one in the NL West, the 2B-3B-SS-RF one in the NL Central.

The most expensive appears to be Caitlyn Jenner, $2,500, and her videos top out at about 30 seconds. Also in the top 10: white trash hero John Daly, $750.

I watched a few of the baseball stars' videos - Dontrelle Willis delivered the most engaging one that I saw.

Don't know if Manny did. Larry Walker did though.

I've mentioned in the past that I do research on Quebec baseball history. I recently made probably my most interesting discovery: an African-American player, Charlie Culver, appeared in 6 games for the Montreal team in the Class B Eastern Canada League in 1922. He's one of the very few that managed to play in Organized Baseball between 1890 and 1946, and maybe the only one not to pretend to be Native American or a light-skinned Cuban.

I have an article in the upcoming issue of the Baseball Research Journal about it, but in the meantime the research is summarized here, and on Culver's BR-page.

Don't know if Manny did. Larry Walker did though.

Benny Agbayani did this as well.

Oh my God... we're witnessing the YogiBerrafication of Manny Ramirez in real time. Any goofy anecdote about a player of Manny Ramirez's era is at some point going to be attributed to Manny Ramirez. (in this case it helps that he was an LF)

Jackie Robinson would have been out stealing home if Yogi hadn't first high-fived a fan.

Here are the quiz answers:

David Fletcher games in 2019
2B 42
3B 90
SS 39
LF 21

Alexi Amarista games in 2014
2B 21
3B 22
SS 73
CF 21

Hernan Perez games in 2018
2B 51

You can search for any combination of games and positions in Play Index Season Finders, check "Played every selected position" and "at least" boxes, choose desired positions, enter number of games in "Total games at" box.

It's amazing how quickly I went from "Yay, KBO baseball" to "Ugh, baseball on ESPN." They are constantly talking about anything besides the current action and it would really help for them to pay attention when I don't know much about the players.
