Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-28-2019

Washington Herald, May 28, 1919:

The flukiest kind of a fluke double due in part to Hap Felsch’s speed and in part to Eddie Foster’s mental lapse, defeated the Nationals [in Chicago yesterday] and gave the White Sox a clean sweep in the series. The final score was 4 to 3.
...
With one out [in the sixth], Felsch’s bounder caromed off Eddie’s glove. While Eddie held the ball Hap sprinted for second, stretching the rap into a double. Gandil singled to left scoring Felsch with the winning run.

This was probably nothing more than a brain fade on Foster’s part, but with the 1919 White Sox (and specifically Felsch) involved, it does make me wonder just a bit.

Did the Athletics ever find a local radio affiliate?

According to news from back in December they tweeted a shot across the bow at their former partner, KGMZ, which apparently pissed off everyone more than a bat flip pisses of Brian McCann. So 6 months ago nobody would give them the time of day.

Willard Hershberger (1.5 WAR)

Hershberger followed his father down a particularly grim path...

SP: Bob Kuzava (4.0 WAR)

The Cardinals, desperate for a lefty in their pen down the stretch in the 1957 pennant race, bought Kuzava from the Pirates. To clear roster space for Kuzava---a "proven veteran" who'd pitched in three World Series for the Yankees---the Cardinals placed Hoyt Wilhelm on waivers, and he was claimed by the Indians.

The 34-year-old Kuzava pitched 2.1 innings for the Cardinals, and never pitched in the majors again.

After being waived, the 34-year-old Wilhelm would go on to make 8 all-star teams while pitching another 1591 innings in 711 games, with 176 saves and exactly 100 wins.
