Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-30-2019

Liberty [Mississippi] Southern Herald, May 30, 1919:

All the blackboard stuff in the world can’t help when such a play is pulled as came off in the Cardinals-Reds game on April 24. In the third inning with one down Heathcote on first, Hornsby hit as clean a smash as ever was poled. It was good for three bases at least. Heathcote ran as far as second, listened to [Cincinnati second baseman] Morris Rath a moment and then raced back for first. He met Hornsby on the way. Rogers passed him and was called out. And there stood Heathcote back on first base, well satisfied with himself.

That’s not a TOOTBLAN, that’s a COOTBAGID*.

* - called out on the basepaths, another guy is dumb.

Manny has hit 82% of the HR by people with May 30 birthdays. He has over 95% if you limit it to people born after 1900.

Trivia question: Since Silver Sluggers were first given out in 1980, eight pitchers have won it more than once. Name them. Hint: All of them have been National Leaguers.

I assume Mike Hampton has to be one--Rick Rhoden?

Hampton is the all-time leader with five.

Glavine has four. I would not have expected that.

Rhoden, Robinson and Zambrano each have three.

Bumgarner and Fernando each have two.

Gooden has one, and Reuschel didn't have any. To be fair, most of Reuschel's best years with the bat came prior to 1980.

There's one left.

Dontrelle never won one. He hit .269/.287/.337 in 2005, with four doubles and a homer plus 11 RBIs, but he lost the Silver Slugger to Jason Marquis, who hit .310/.326/.460, including eight (!) doubles. Sillyball, man.

Boy I don't really know. Who's left - 80s guy, 90s guy, or later?

The one remaining multiple Silver Slugger won it in 1980 and 1987, pitching for the Cardinals both years. He was pretty terrific both years: .295/.313/.447 in 1980, with five doubles and three homers, and .298/.333/.509 in 1987, with eight doubles and two homers.

That would be Bob Forsch, no?

That would be Bob Forsch!
