Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-31-2021

Great Falls Tribune, May 31, 1921:

Baseball men of the entire country paused Monday in honor of the memory of Captain Edwin R. Grant, former National league infielder, the only major baseball player killed in the world war.

A bronze tablet on a marble shaft was unveiled in honor of the former star at the Polo grounds Monday afternoon. Grant was a member of the 307th infantry and was killed in the Argonne, October 15, 1918, when, as acting major, he was in charge of forces detailed to rescue the “Lost Battalion.”

The Grant plaque disappeared in 1957 and has never definitively been found.

I never knew till today that there was a Socks Seybold and a Socks Seibold, and nary another player with either last name. BB-Ref only lists two other guys nicknamed Socks, who combined for 60 at-bats in the majors.

#2 It's a name I was sort of familiar with but I guess I linked the two players in my mind as a single player with a very long career.

Socks Seibold has a distinction of being a pitcher who had his career year (120 ERA+, his only year over 100) in 1930.

The SSL certificate on mets.com is expired. Good job, MLB.

In case anyone looks, Baseball-Reference lists Grant as Eddie Grant.
