Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-7-2021

Indiana Daily Times, May 7, 1921:

While Johnny Evers, Cub manager, was coaching at first base in the sixth inning yesterday, Moran’s athletes began hurling unkind remarks at John. The Cub boss walked over to the Cincy Red bench, delivered a lecture to the peppery hostile, and then returned to his toil. John won the decision on words.

Johnny Evers was a smidge high-strung, it seems.

Anderson Espinoza pitched in a game last night for the first time since 2016.

Not-that-one Mark Smith homered in the tenth to win Francisco Cordova/Ricardo Rincon's combined no-hitter in 1997.

I had forgotten that James Loney was one of the players the Dodgers shipped to the Red Sox in the famous Carl Crawford/Josh Beckett/Adrian Gonzalez salary dump. Loney lasted only 30 games in Boston - which was the most for any of the five players the Sox got in that deal.

I think Allen Webster was one of the other 4, but could not possibly name the last 3.

My memory is apparently off, because I could have sworn that Loney had about 11.3 fewer WAR than that.

Took a look at the standings today for first time in about a week. Cool that every team is within +/- 7 games of .500 (except the Tiggers). Teams that were supposed to be terrible (like my O's) are hanging around 500. Teams that were supposed to run away and hide (like the Dodgers) haven't done so yet. Will make for a great pennant race if it holds.

The one I always remember is Rubby de la Rosa, because his name is "Rubby."

Keon Broxton is a name I hadn't thought about in a while. Had to look up to see if he spent any time with my beloved Blue Jays, but nope, I only remember him from hoping we would help out a fantasy team or two. Pretty sure he didn't make much of a (positive) difference.

It's the fifth anniversary of Bartolo Colon's home run, so he's due.

Pronounced, rather disappointingly, the same as "Ruby."

I remember him from his time with the Mariners in 2019. He hit .115, with 33 strikeouts in 52 at bats. In all my years of watching baseball, I have never seen a player who looked as overmatched and utterly lost as he was.

I confuse Keon "not traded for Christian Yelich" Broxton with Lewis "I was" Brinson. Lewis, career OPS+ 47, is putting up a 42 so far this year. Isan Diaz, 49 OPS+ in 250 PA, and Monte Harrison, 31 OPS+ in 60 PA, were also in that trade. Jordan Yamamoto, 71 ERA+ in 93 IP, has been the big return on that trade so far.

Loney was an interesting guy discussed a bit around here back in the day. A solid but not top prospect then put up a line of 380/426/546 at AAA. Which is just a weird line anywhere and in this case it was at Vegas. I recall arguing that (a) he's obviously not gonna hit anything like 380 in the majors; (b) no walks; (c) a 166 ISO at Vegas PCL was the opposite of impressive. Naturally he came up and hit 284/342/559 and I looked like an idiot. Back at Vegas the next year, he put up a line of 279/345/382 and I looked smart ... then he came up and hit 331/381/538 and I looked like an idiot again.

Thankfully the rest of his career (280/333/397) restored my self-esteem.

Anyway, as 11 WAR suggests, he was OK. Sorta the Mitch Moreland of his day -- good glove, overall average bat, durable. That "rest of his career" worked out to almost exactly a 1-WAR player, the kind of guy when he's on your team you keep saying "can't my team find a better 1B than this?" but good enough that somebody always gave him a job ... until they didn't (replacement level at 31-32). That was followed by a smidgen of terrible hitting in AAA, then a bit of time in the KBO and eventually a few PAs at SugarLand.

loney was with the dodgers when i lived in LA so i saw him a bit, and it always seemed like he did some boneheaded thing in every game i went to, or left runners stranded etc. ... he was a frustrating player to watch.
