Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-14-2021

Toledo News-Bee, June 14, 1921:

Babe Ruth didn’t star as a pitcher on Monday, but he did as a batsman. The Babe started the game on the mound for the Yanks and worked five innings against the Tigers.

Babe was a bit wild and when Detroit got to him for four runs in the fifth he retired in favor of Mays.

But Babe was there when it came to clouting ‘em and he poled his twentieth and twenty-first home runs of the season.

This was Ruth’s last appearance as a starting pitcher until 1930. I wonder what he was doing the rest of that time.

A pretty good pitching staff on today's Birthday Team, but not much on offense. Buffinton spent some time as a center fielder and might be a better option than Turang, though there's really no right answer between the two. Newcombe would likely be the second-best outfielder on the roster if he had spent any time out there.

It's probably not a great sign for your team when you're trying to decide whether your #1 and #2 pitchers are better outfielders than your actual outfielders.

Love those 19th century pitching lines: 5 seasons, 2050 IP, 30 WAR. :-)

Newcombe would likely be the second-best outfielder on the roster if he had spent any time out there.

Newcombe played 55 games in the outfield (and 27 at first base) for the Chunichi Dragons in the Japanese Central League in 1962. He hit .262/.316/.473 in 301 PA, with 12 HR and 23 doubles. That .473 SLP would have ranked third in the league, behind only Sadaharu Oh and Shigeo Nagashima, if he had had enough PA to qualify. It was very much a pitcher's league - the CL hit .231/.284/.335 that season, so Newcombe's line is far better than it might first appear.

They were probably using him as a LOOGY.

SI: ‘That Is One Magic Loogie.’ Today Is the 34th Anniversary of Two Mets Players Spitting on Two Trash-Talking Fans

“June 14, 1987. Mets. Phillies. We’re enjoying a beautiful afternoon in the right-field stands when a crucial Hernandez error opens the doors to a five-run Phillies ninth. Cost the Mets the game.”

That was how Newman began to tell the tale of Keith Hernandez's allegedly spitting on him and Kramer after Newman yelled, “Nice game, pretty boy,” at the Mets first baseman after a game that took place on this date 34 years ago.
