Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-17-2020

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, June 17, 1920:

The trial of Benny Kauff, centerfielder of the New York National League Club, on a charge made in connection with the alleged theft of an automobile, was fixed today to follow that of John J. Brady, Jr., which is set for July 20. Brady, an attorney, is charged with the theft of an automobile.

The two men indicted with Brady for stealing the automobile pleaded guilty and made statements to the District Attorney which he expects to use in the trials of Kauff and Brady.

And thus began the saga of one of the weirdest lifetime bans in baseball history.

There's no shortage of personality in the outfield of today's Birthday Team. I have a feeling Browning and Super Joe would be fast friends.

C: Chink Outen (0.7 WAR)
1B: Claude Rossman (5.7 WAR)
2B: Zeb Terry (7.6 WAR)
3B: Manuel Lee (9.7 WAR)
SS: Dave Concepcion (40.1 WAR)
LF: Joe Charboneau (1.5 WAR)
CF: Pete Browning (40.4 WAR)
RF: Mickey Brantley (0.9 WAR)

SP: Phil Douglas (12.2 WAR)
SP: Willard Nixon (9.2 WAR)
SP: Joe Bowman (7.4 WAR)
SP: Mike Magnante (5.5 WAR)
SP: Bennie Daniels (3.1 WAR)
RP: Andrew Chafin (3.8 WAR)

Broadcaster: Ray Scott
Threw back-to-back no-hitters in AAA, then a third later in the season: Tom Drees
No relation to Carl: Bill Hubbell
Not that one: Pete O'Brien
First overall pick in MLB Draft: Shawn Abner (-1.3 WAR)
Tragedy: Dernell Stenson
Pro Football Hall of Famer, part owner of a Frontier League team: Dermontti Dawson

Some fielding stats courtesy Lahman database.

Most total chances at SS in a season with no errors, 1876-2019:
160 Placido Polanco 2001
155 Jed Lowrie 2008
142 Rafael Bournigal 1998
121 Chin-lung Hu 2008
118 Jamey Carroll 2005

Most total chances at 3B in a season with no errors, 1876-2019:
137 Jim Davenport 1967
135 Wayne Garrett 1977
122 Nick Punto 2010
111 Danny O'Connell 1954
97 Frankie Frisch 1932

I didn't remember O'Connell at all. Found out he scored the first run in the first major league game played on the West Coast on 4-15-58, and Davenport drove him in.

And thus began the saga of one of the weirdest lifetime bans in baseball history.

The fact that Kauff played in the Federal League (and was a Jew) probably didn't help.

Our staff ace also got hit with a lifetime ban under bizarre circumstances.

Douglas has an interesting distinction: every year he pitched, his winning percentage improved. Eight times over!
