Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-17-2021

Toledo News-Bee, June 17, 1921:

Babe Ruth has met his match—but it isn’t human. Ruth failed yesterday at balls pitched by a pitching machine operated by compressed air. Slow balls, high balls, low balls, fast and curved balls floated from the nozzle of the machine and Babe couldn’t touch them.

He declared the difficulty was that the batter cannot tell when the ball will be let loose.

Excuses, excuses. Next he’ll want to be allowed to keep his eyes open when the pitch comes.

There's no shortage of personality in the outfield of today's Birthday Team. I have a feeling Browning and Super Joe would be fast friends.

I had this exact same problem...when I was nine...and Maury Wills was watching. Still crushingly embarrassing.

So Ruth and I have that in common, and we both like hot dogs, and...I'm not sure I could sustain a conversation with Ruth for very long.

With a break here or there (and maybe better management by the Mariners), Mickey Brantley should have had a career similar to his son, Michael.

Ruth seems like a guy who would have gotten along with anyone. Bring a case of beer, and I'm sure you'd have a grand old time.

Now DiMaggio, he was an aloof jerk.
