Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-13-2021

Omaha Daily Bee, July 13, 1921:

Babe Ruth, by knocking two home runs [yesterday], brought his record for the season to 34 and gave New York the victory over St. Louis, 6 to 4.

Those home runs were the 136th and 137th of Ruth’s career, putting him one behind Roger Connor for the all-time career record. Not bad for a 26-year-old.

Cody Bellinger was the NL MVP in 2019. Since then, in 384 plate appearances, he's hit .217/.318/.401.

Who spent his first 5 MLB seasons as a [very good] pitcher!

"...including three active current stars."

Shin-Soo Choo is playing this season for the SSG Landers in the KBO. He's not playing in MLB, but he's still active.

When Aaron hit #715 the newspapers and wire services talked about how he'd beaten Ruth's "39-year-old" record of 714 home runs. It would have been more accurate to say that Aaron ended Ruth's 53-year reign as the all-time MLB home run champ.

Luther Farrell probably pitches in an integrated league. He was an erratic young pitcher who put it together for two fine seasons (anchoring the Atlantic City team that lost the 1927 Negro World Series). Then, in 1929, at age 32, it looks like he suffered a catastrophic, career-ending injury, returning only for a sour cup of coffee in 1934.
