Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-14-2020

[Juneau] Alaska Daily Empire, July 14, 1920:

A water baseball game will be staged at Del Monte [California] July 17 and 18 between teams from the Olympic Club of San Francisco and Del Monte.
...
The game is played with a team of seven men on a side, a pitcher, catcher, three basemen and two outfielders. A water polo ball is used with a short south bat. The rules are the same as in baseball with the players swimming to bases.

I’ve never seen water baseball, but I assume spitballs wouldn’t be very useful.

A strong Bastille Day Birthday Team. Obviously Ventura was a terrific defensive third baseman and if this were a real team, I assume he and Gleason would swap infield corners. But it's not and Gleason never played first base, so this is what we've got.

C: Earl Williams (7.9 WAR)
1B/Manager: Robin Ventura (56.1 WAR)
2B: Billy Smith (2.9 WAR)
3B/Not that one: Jack Gleason (4.4 WAR)
SS: Jose Hernandez (13.3 WAR)
LF: Dave Harris (5.9 WAR)
CF: Jim Holdsworth (3.0 WAR)
RF: Steve Brady (3.2 WAR)

SP: Tim Hudson (57.9 WAR)
SP: Jesse Tannehill (47.1 WAR)
SP: Bob Purkey (22.9 WAR)
SP: Steve Stone (17.1 WAR)
SP: Lucas Giolito (5.7 WAR)
RP: Johnny Murphy (15.0 WAR)

-4.1 career WAR: Jiggs Parrott (-4.1 WAR)
-4.8 career WAR: Pepe Frias (-4.8 WAR)
Commissioner: Happy Chandler
Fun names: Ed Hug, Happy Smith, Law Daniels
Inspiration for a Costner character: Crash Davis

Oh how I remember Earl Williams and Earl Weaver.

Weaver had issues with more than a few players but Williams drove him nuts.

Robin Ventura struck out a pretty good amount- he had four years with more than 100 K. But Jose Hernandez had 200 more strikeouts than Ventura and in 3200 fewer plate appearances.

But Jose Hernandez had 200 more strikeouts than Ventura and in 3200 fewer plate appearances.

Hernandez is one of 4 players with >170 k's in a season with a SLG <.350 (Dunn, Chris Davis, and Melvin Upton are the others)

The rules are the same as in baseball

more or less.
   6. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 14, 2020 at 08:48 PM (#5962925)
They added a couple new safety rules a few years ago to prevent Chase Utley from breaking up the double play by holding the opposing shortstop under the water until he drowned.

I live in what used to be Del Monte (now part of Monterey). The Roman Plunge is on what used to be the Hotel Del Monte, which is now the Naval Postgraduate School. I have been on the grounds, but I've never had occasion to go to that section of the base - the aerial and historical photos make it seem quite picturesque.

Given the pool is very rectangular, I have to wonder whether there was a LA Coliseum effect, though trying to hit a water polo ball with a fungo bat while floating has to dampen one's ability to pull the ball...
