Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-16-2020

Washington Herald, July 16, 1920:

With two on bases in the eleventh inning and the score tied at 10 to 10, Babe Ruth hit his twenty-ninth home run of the season [yesterday] afternoon, winning for the Yankees over the St. Louis Browns by a score of 13 to 10. The homer tied the major league record hung up by Babe last season.

And it’s still freaking mid-July. Elsewhere on the same page:

Not only does a new home run record appear to be certain in the majors, but indications are now that the Yankee slugger will run the total around fifty before the season ends.

You haven’t seen anything yet.

Today's Birthday Team. I guess the good news is that we don't need to worry about Joe Jackson throwing World Series games. I don't often pick active NPB/KBO/CPBL players that have never appeared in the majors, but Yamada is one of the best players in NPB. If you really want to, you can tell him he's on the bench behind Ildemaro Vargas.

MLB will begin the season without scouts:
The 2020 campaign will begin without live scouts, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (Twitter link).
. . .
There is a glimmer of hope here. Per Rosenthal, Major League Baseball will consider loosening the restrictions once the campaign is underway. Presumably, it wouldn’t be especially challenging to allow entry from a logistical standpoint. Doing so might even offer an opportunity for teams to shake down their protocols for potential reentry of live spectators.
Shouldn’t be that difficult to admit a handful of scouts and keep them socially distanced, so it seems likely to be allowed before long.

But if nobody has 'em, it doesn't hurt anybody.

Teams that are good at advance scouting are affected more than teams that aren’t. Maybe MLB wants to keep things simple for the reopening, but a scout sitting outdoors with no one within 50 feet should be a lower risk than a trip to the grocery store, so an unjustified season long ban seems like an unnecessary departure from regular MLB operations.

Wait, John Keefe?!? Does he also go by Jack? I wait with bated breath.

Can't they just scout by video?
