Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-16-2021

Indiana Daily Times, July 16, 1921:

Arthur Irwin, old-time big league baseball player, vanished from the steamship Calvin Austin, New York to Boston, early today. It is believed he either jumped or fell overboard and was drowned.

Irwin was last seen shortly before midnight when he was talking with an old frield aboard the steamer, to whom he admitted despondency because of ill health. Irwin told his friend that he had been in a hospital and was coming home to his brother John’s to die.

Irwin was a strange guy; he had a wife and son in Boston and a different wife and son in New York. The two sons found out about each other shortly before Irwin’s death when they both visited him in the hospital.

There were theories about Irwin faking his death or being murdered, but between his stomach cancer and his personal life imploding around him, it doesn’t take a lot of imagination to come to the conclusion he likely jumped.

Today's Birthday Team. I guess the good news is that we don't need to worry about Joe Jackson throwing World Series games. I don't often pick active NPB/KBO/CPBL players that have never appeared in the majors, but Yamada is one of the best players in NPB. If you really want to, you can tell him he's on the bench behind Ildemaro Vargas.

It’s a shame that Tommy Joseph had to move from behind the plate due to a series of concussions. A 97 OPS+ would play well as a C. It appears that at age 30 he’s done, after a year in the KBO.

He’s listed at 6’1, 255. I don’t remember him being THAT big.

Bill Norman can maybe bolster the birthday outfield: 103 at-bats in the majors with poor results, but he had an 18-year pro career, mostly in the high minors. He was a mainstay of Bill Veeck's Milwaukee teams during the war.

Kelenic had about as bad a debut in the majors as possible. Still raking at AAA though at 320/392/624.

Haven't seen it mentioned here: Dick Tidrow passed away at 74.
