Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-30-2021

New Britain Herald, July 30, 1921:

COPS MUST PAY

Revocation of park privileges to all plain clothes men and detectives except a limited number was contained in a letter sent today to Director of Public Safety Robert J. Alderdice by Samuel Watters, secretary of the Pittsburgh Baseball Co.

Mr. Watters said the privileged had been granted in an effort to break up gambling in the Pirates’ park here but that it had proved ineffective. Hereafter, he said, except those on duty, the police will have to pay as others to see the game.

1. Let cops watch free baseball
2. ?????
3. No gambling!

A solid Birthday Team today. Nothing of note at 1B or 2B, so Triandos gets to cavort around the initial sack aside the sub-replacement level Jack Conway. Triandos is nowhere near a 14.0 WAR player as a first baseman.

C: Frankie Pytlak (8.6 WAR)
1B: Gus Triandos (14.1 WAR)
2B: Jack Conway (-0.9 WAR)
3B: Doug Rader (24.4 WAR)
SS: Scott Fletcher (32.0 WAR)
LF: Vic Davalillo (15.8 WAR)
CF/Manager: Casey Stengel (20.2 WAR)
RF: Ellis Valentine (17.1 WAR)

SP/Broadcaster: Joe Nuxhall (30.3 WAR)
SP: Paul Minner (19.2 WAR)
SP: Steve Trout (13.4 WAR)
SP: Joe Coleman (6.3 WAR)
SP: Scott Diamond (2.1 WAR)
RP: Ricky Horton (4.9 WAR)

Owner/Commissioner: Bud Selig

I've always thought Scott Fletcher must be one of the more surprising 30-WAR players.

Stumbled across this bit of trivia last week--what place (town/city) has produced two players with the most combined WAR? ("produced" means they were born there). Here are the WAR totals

255.5
231.2
220.6
220.0
212.5
193.1
190
162.8
162.4
150.1

note that this is position player WAR only. If pitching WAR were included, then Dayton (Schmidt/Clemens) would have 245.6 and Omaha (Boggs/Gibson) would have 173.1. One of the places on the list is outside the US

Missing from today's birthday team is Clint Hurdle, who would slot in at first base if we could move Triandos back behind home plate, and is a heck of a backup manager behind Casey. Hurdle is a famous bust, but through 1981, his fifth year in the majors, he still looked like a star in the making: His career numbers at that point were .276/.353/.432, good for a 116 OPS+, and he had just turned 24.

But he was also a drunk who couldn't stay on the field, and the Royals dumped him on the Reds for a pitcher who won one game in his major league career. For the rest of his career, Hurdle hit .196/.299/.301.

I'm researching another quiz where you have to take one position player & one pitcher--I believe as I mentioned above that Dayton would be #1 with Schmidt & Clemens and NYC (ARod/ Jim Palmer) would be up there

plus you could probably add ANY pitcher from Baltimore and you'd be in the top ten (including Ruth himself)

Yep. I've already stopped watching live baseball and MLB Network over it. I imagine it will be all live sports by the time the other lesser sports start back up again. And we're not even yet (I don't think) into the era of constant prop betting during game broadcasts.

The Nats still have Soto. They also still have Robles, who was at one time considered a better prospect than Soto, although he has yet to show it. Some of the prospects they picked up need to pan out, or it is going to be a dreary few years.

I don't know whether to thank you for confirming that MLB itself is now actively promoting gambling on baseball or just cry into my morning Froot Loops. Maybe I'll do both.
