Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-7-2021

Vernon Parish [Louisiana] Democrat, July 7, 1921:

Few of the thousands of fans in baseball who have seen or heard of “Brick” Owens, American league umpire, know that he acquired his monicker when he was nineteen years old. Neither do they know how he acquired it, although many of them may guess right.
It all happened in Independence, Kan…In one of those tough decisions Independence got the worst end of the deal and an angered fan hurled a piece of red masonry, which struck Owens in the head. Owens, unfazed, went on running the game…

Unfortunately, this is not how Bill “Catfish” Klem got his nickname.

Good Birthday Team today. It's Cleveland-heavy: Melton, Satch, Burba, Barker, and Shaw all played for the Tribe. Dybzinski did too; he was also born and raised in Cleveland and went to college at Cleveland State.

C: John Buck (5.8 WAR)
1B: Tim Teufel (15.3 WAR)
2B: Billy Herman (57.4 WAR)
3B: George Moriarty (14.1 WAR)
SS: Jerry Dybzinski (2.1 WAR)
LF: Chuck Knoblauch (44.6 WAR)
CF: Dan Gladden (15.5 WAR)
RF: Bill Melton (18.7 WAR)

SP: Satchel Paige (46.3 WAR)
SP: George Suggs (22.5 WAR)
SP: Dave Burba (16.5 WAR)
SP: Len Barker (12.7 WAR)
SP/Backup C: Ted Radcliffe (10.7 WAR)
RP: Jeff Shaw (13.7 WAR)
RP: Matt Mantei (4.3 WAR)

Manager: Terry Bevington
Fun names: Leyson Septimo, Happy Iott, R.J. Swindle, Alfredo Figaro

...and you could start your line-up with three Twins table-setters!

"Double Duty" Radcliffe had one of the greatest nicknames ever, but for some reason, his BR page doesn't list it.

This has to be one of the strongest Birthday Teams. I'd put Nate Lowe at 1B and deploy Teufel as a super-sub. 1950's Sammy White and Buck would be a fine pair of catchers, allowing Radcliffe to focus on pitching. Franmil Reyes, Brandon McCarthy, and Jose Jimenez would all have roles.

Ridiculous. Any "nickname" some mope posted on a blog once seems to get included for modern players. Double Duty, possibly a name more people know him as than Ted, doesn't? B-R is really messed up on the nicknames.
