Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-9-2021

Pittsburgh Press, July 9, 1921:

Baseball fans attending games at Forbes Field will no longer be molested by policemen when they keep baseballs knocked into the stands, according to an order issued yesterday by Director of Public Safety Robert J. Alderdice. This decision was arrived at following threatened damage suits against three officers who placed three fans under arrest for refusing to throw balls back on to the diamond.
...
During the last few weeks baseballs knocked into the grandstand or bleachers have been thrown back on the playing field by the fans on threat of arrest. In the future any action against those retaining the spheres will have to be taken by employees of the park.

I imagine that if the police weren’t willing to get involved, ushers weren’t going to be terribly successful.

A pretty ho-hum Birthday Team today.

Looking at J.C. Linares's Cuban stats, I thought he might be a candidate to play right, but I hadn't realized he had defected and never made it to the majors.

A rookie who might be a future candidate for today's birthday's team is Hiroshima Toyo Carp pitcher Ryoji Kuribayashi, who turns 25 today. Kuribayashi won the closer role for the Carp and has been lights out so far, with 17 saves and an 0.57 ERA in 32 games. He set a rookie record with 22 straight scoreless appearances to start his career. In 31-2/3 innings this season, he's given up 13 hits (no home runs) and struck out 52. He was just named as one of five Carp on Japan's Olympic baseball squad, which features star NPB players such as Masahiro Tanaka; Tomoyuki Sugano, the reigning Central League MVP; and Yudai Ono, last year’s Sawamura Award winner.

In semi-related news, my mother informs me Gordon Lightfoot is alive and currently touring....and you thought Keith Richards was hardy!

Checking b-r, Rusney played a bit in Mexico last year and is in Japan this year, posting a 328/384/358 line in what appears to be part-time duty.

Gordon Lightfoot is 82 and released his 22nd album last year, "Solo", his first album since 2012. Impressively, from 1966-76, he released 12 albums ... his production pace has slowed a bit since then.
