Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-11-2020

Memphis News Scimitar, August 11, 1920:

Outfielder Harper, of the Little Rock Southern Association club, was arrested and held in $500 bail yesterday on a warrant charging “malicious mischief” after Manager Elberfeld, of the Little Rock club, had refused to pay for the canvas coverings on the bases that Harper is alleged to have damaged yesterday with his spikes.

The arrest came fifteen minutes before the first game of the double-header yesterday and Elberfeld announced in advance he would protest the game. Zoellers played right field until Harper could be taken to the city criminal court, make bond and return to the park.

Sounds like this was a bit of gamesmanship by an Atlanta team that was in a close pennant race with Little Rock, New Orleans, and Birmingham and wanted to gain an edge.

In other news, Carl Mays threw a complete game as the Yankees beat the Indians 11-4 yesterday at the Polo Grounds. Ray Chapman went 1-for-5 with a triple and a run scored. Why do I mention this? No reason.

Murphy has a surprisingly insurmountable lead in the race for Daniel Murphy WAR, leading the current one 35.7 to 21.2. There's also a Danny Murphy who came up as a teenage outfielder for the Cubs in 1960, resurfaced as a pitcher for the White Sox in 1969, and was bad enough at both to finish with 0.1 WAR.

Former Soul Asylum guitarist Dan Murphy has a solid lead in the race for Daniel Murphy Rock Above Replacement.

Yes, I would estimate his WAR at 31.2 (Wicked Awesome Rocking)

Dave Pirner is around 8.7

I was looking up Steven Wright's career which led me to Ryan Lavarnway's career.

Perhaps you know that his career didn't end when he was waived by the Red Sox. But did you know he has played in the majors for 6 other teams since then, totaling 150 PA? And he has signed free agent contracts with 3 OTHER teams that didn't promote him from AAA? And he's in the majors RIGHT NOW?

I saw Lavarnway last week as a Marlin and I think he played for Team Israel, but I'd be at a loss to name any of the other teams that have employed him.

I'm not sure Colby Rasmus is an example of somebody who has a lot more career WAR than I'd have thought or a reminder of how quickly a quality MLB career can get derailed.

Upon review I'll put him in the former category. What an odd career. Starting at age 22, his OPS+ went 89, 137, 88, 86, 127, 105, 116, 77, 137 (129 PAs), then a final 49 PA that made him HoF-eligible (but probably not 10 years service time). He had a 5 WAR season and 3 other good years, the rest of the time he was around average except 2011. 20 WAR, 6 WAA, 5 dWAR as an average-ish CF and good LF, 102 OPS+.

The Murphy team is not too shabby (and this is without a lot of digging)

C: John Ryan Murphy (his 8th season with ML PAs)
1B: David Murphy (a stretch)
2B: Danny Murphy
3B: Daniel Murphy (no, it's not going to go well)
LF: Eddie Murphy (not that one)
CF: Dwayne Muprhy
RF: Dale Murphy (could put him at 1B and David here)
P: Tom Murphy (thoroughly mediocre 70s guy)
Fun name: Buzz Murphy

It's not gonna do so great against the Williams or Johnsons but probably at least holds its own with the Disappointing Davises.

Little Rock and Atlanta split that double-header, Atlanta winning the first game 10-1, and Little Rock the second, 2-0. Harper scored a run in each game.

Oh probably need to put Donnie Murphy at SS unless there's a Murphy I missed.
