Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-13-2019

Bridgeport Times, August 13, 1919:

Organized baseball is about to receive a thorough housecleaning. Sick and tired of the manner in which the present National Commission has governed the game, the clubowners of both the American and National Leagues, at a recent meeting decided to make a drastic change.

The change will be the appointment of Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, of Chicago, as supreme head of organized baseball.

They weren’t wrong. It just took about 15 months to happen.

Saw this on Twitter:
.281/.376/.631, 59 HR in 692 PA
.301/.385/.646, 59 HR in 693 PA

One of those is Giancarlo Stanton’s MVP season. The other is this year’s Yankees against the Orioles. Can you guess which is which?

Itchy, the first one must be Giancarlo. Don't think he hit .300 that year.

Yeah, the .301 line is the Yankees vs. the Orioles. O’s pitching has turned the entire Yankee lineup into a better version of 2017 Giancarlo Stanton.

Stanton has only gotten to face Baltimore in three games this year.

Wilmer David Mizell was born near Vinegar Bend, Alabama, the source of his nickname. The highlight of his career was probably being traded to the Pirates in 1960, where he went 13-5, and winning a World Championship (although he personally did not pitch well in the World Series).

After leaving organized baseball, he entered politics, serving as the Republican Congressional Representative from the 5th District in North Carolina for three terms, starting in 1968. He lost his seat in 1974 in the big Democratic wave after Watergate.

He was appointed to several positions in Republican administrations, including as an Assistant Secretary of Commerce and an Assistant Secretary of Agriculture.

I was hoping for a more interesting origin for his nickname, but he did have a pretty interesting life.
