Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-13-2020

[Indianapolis] Indiana Daily Times, August 13, 1920:

Baseball Fan Is ‘Nut,’ Baltimore Judge Rules

Police Justice Schroeder believes that rooters at a baseball game suffer from a mild form of insanity when they mob the umpires or throw pop bottles and other missiles at visiting players.

And because the court so believes is why Albert Darago, 18, is not in jail.

Darago threw a missile wrapped in paper at Mike Doolan, one of the umpires in a game between Baltimore and Buffalo. Darago’s aim was bad and it struck Police Sergeant Gooding. In fining Darago, Judge Schroeder said, “I believe Darago lost his reason temporarily in the heat of his enthusiasm for the Baltimore team, therefore I simply will fine him this time.”

I had no idea that “I’m just really into baseball” could be an effective criminal defense.

Today's Birthday Team doesn't have any huge stars, but it's pretty good everywhere including a nice pitching staff. Randal Grichuk started in left field last year, but has now lost his job to Corey Patterson after putting up -2.1 WAR in his last 162 games played.

C: Fatty Briody (4.1 WAR)
1B: Andre Thornton (24.2 WAR)
2B: Mark Lemke (6.1 WAR)
3B: Sid Gordon (38.3 WAR)
SS: George Perring (7.2 WAR)
LF: Corey Patterson (9.7 WAR)
CF/Manager: Fielder Jones (43.2 WAR)
RF: Jay Buhner (23.0 WAR)

SP: Alex Fernandez (28.5 WAR)
SP: Jarrod Washburn (28.1 WAR)
SP: Mudcat Grant (21.1 WAR)
SP: Jim Shaw (17.7 WAR)
SP: Vinegar Bend Mizell (14.7 WAR)
RP: Tom Niedenfuer (10.3 WAR)

Owners: Charles DeWitt, Daniel McCarthy
Umpires: Jerry Crawford, Jerry Neudecker
Cranky Perfect Game Pitcher: Dallas Braden
Hitter of Grand Slams: Tony Cloninger
Fun names: Limb McKenry, Hercules Burnett

23.0 WAR! That's it?! He'd hit 30 home runs, would get 100 RBI. He had a rocket for an arm. You don’t know what the hell you’re doin’!

Trivia from last night's Cubs game: What 2 active pitchers have won an ERA title but have not made an All Star game?

Fun fact, Jay Buhner never had a season HR total in the 30's. 3 times in the 40's, but his 4th highest was 27.

I assume one of the answers is Kyle Hendricks.

Of course, which is what prompted the question.

I never would have guessed the other guy. By cheating, I found out Rick Porcello (not the answer) hasn't made an all star team. Porcello has the most wins for an active non-all star. The ERA title winner is a distant second.

Grichuk's bWAR (9.1) is below Petterson's but it's not because of the the past 162 games played, he's at 0.1 bWAR over that period. Oddly last year's dugout listed him at 10.3 bWAR on this day when he would've been around 9.2 or so (just eyeballing it, he had a .215/.244/.517 line after this day last year which is close to his OPS over the season but in a different shape (,232/.280/.457 total)).

Maybe he got dinged by a defensive reassessment or something. Weird.
