Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-2-2019

Yankees owner Cap Huston responds to a quote from Ban Johnson about the Carl Mays suspension standing unless “evidence of extenuating circumstances was produced”.

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, August 2, 1919:

“If Ban Johnson means that, I can promise him one of the most interesting baseball fights this game ever has seen. I also will promise both Mr. Johnson and the general baseball public that the New York club will not sit idly by and stand for this interference with its property rights.”

I do believe those are fighting words.

Because I'm in one of those moods this week....

BASEBALL TRIVIA TIME:
Currently, there are 46 active MLB'rs who have hit at least 100 home runs for their current team. Can you name any?

Please list the player & the team in your guesses. (It can be confusing at times otherwise).

3 guys are on their 2nd go-around with the club. But all homers hit in their 1st go-around count as well.

BONUS QUESTION
Those 46 players are on 25 different teams. Thus five clubs have nobody on their roster who have hit 100 homers for that club yet. Bonus point if you can name the top homer guy for any of those five clubs.

....so - any guesses?

Kipnis? DING! He's one of four Indians on the list (him, Santana, Lindor, and Jose Ramirez). That's the most by any team.

He closes out the AL Central. The AL East is also done.

2 AL West players.
2 NL Central players
1 NL East player
1 NL West player

1 catcher.
1 first baseman
1 third baseman
1 center fielder
1 right fielder
1 DH

(Positions are they're current ones. Some guys have shifted over the years. The DH used to play OF. The CF used to be in LF).

4 of the 6 have spent their entire career with one team. But they're kinda boring guys who've spent a while with one team.

One guy came back to his team this year after some years away. But he's probably the biggest name left. He's got the most HR of anyone left on the list - 186 w/ his team. (280 HR total in his full career).

One guy has 207 career HR, but 103 with his current team.

Post #54:
Matt Carpenter? DING! He's the two-time doubles leader I mentioned in post #55.

Those guys close out the NL Central.

3 left. All in the western divisions. The highest ranking guy is a 1B who has spent his entire time with the same team.

There's also a mid-30s DH w/ over 200 career HR - but just 103 w/ his current team.
And the other guy primarily plays RF, and has spent it all with one team.

None are stars. All are just journeymen-types, but two just haven't journeyed away at all.

DING! Brandon Belt is the last NL Player.

Last one left is an AL West RF who has hit 131 career HR, all with the same club, who he broke in with in 2012. Never an All-Star. His 807 OPS this year is almost the highest of his career - despite a .236 batting average this year that's 15 points below his career average. Yeah, he's a boring player - which is why he's the last guy left to name.

Some notable round-number baseball anniversaries today:
50 years ago today, umpire Bill Haller ejected Earl Weaver for....smoking in the dugout (!)

40 years ago today, Thurmon Munson died in a plane crash

20 years ago today, Mark McGwire tripled for the first time in 11 years and 5,764 PA.

You tell 'em, Tillie.

40 years ago today, Thurmon Munson died in a plane crash

And 40 years ago this afternoon I was watching a "Gilligan's Island" rerun on WNEW-5 in New York -- the episode where John McGiver was the butterfly collector -- when they broke in with the news bulletin announcing Thurman's death.
