Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-6-2021

Toledo News-Bee, August 6, 1921:

Harold J. Lentz, world’s champion surf caster, failed in his attempt to cast a four-ouce lead as far as Babe Ruth has hit a home run into the center field bleacher at the Polo Grounds before Friday’s game between Yankees and Detroit.

With a stiff wind blowing Lentz made five tries. His best was 440 feet as compared to the estimated 500 feed that Ruth got on his longest swat.

Still, a 440-foot cast is bonkers.

Elsewhere on the same page of the News-Bee, the chairman of the National Board of the Minor League Association says the Black Sox will not be permitted to play in the minors.

It was a good Birthday Team anyway, but when you remove Cam Carreon and replace him with Atsuya Furuta, it becomes a fantastic Birthday Team.

Just tell the pitchers not to allow any groundballs. That IF D is brutal.

The linked newspaper has the day's batting leaders, with the Braves' "Chris'y" leading the NL at .440, over Hornsby's .415. Turns out it's Lloyd Christenbury, who got only 152 at-bats in 1921 and 440 in his career. He didn't get into a game until two weeks into the season, then played four full games. At that point, he was hitting .421 but was nonetheless benched. He didn't start another game until August 26, when he was still at .415. His average peaked at .458 at the end of May, and again at .447 in mid-August. He became the regular second baseman on August 26, and a couple four-hit games pushed him back to .446 on September 3 and .438 on September 8. The magic ran out between games of the September 8 doubleheader, and he batted .231 the rest of the way to finish at .352.

Between Phelps and Zambrano, quite a bit of overlap between this birthday team and the "Most Hated Trades in New York Baseball History" team.

Also a strong, deep bullpen with Stan Belinda, Luis Vizcaino, Ron Davis, and John Gant complementing McGee.
