Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-7-2020

New York Evening World, August 7, 1920:

Babe Ruth banged out two home runs, his fortieth and forty-first, in the second game of the Yanks’ series with the Tigers, enabling the New York pennant-chasers to win, 11 to 7.

Babe Ruth produces more homers in a week than Ancient Greece did in a lifetime.

You guys, I’m beginning to think Babe Ruth was good at baseball.

Today's Birthday Team features the greatest baseball player I have ever seen. Mike Trout has racked up more WAR in his 20s than Derek Jeter, Tony Gwynn, Barry Larkin, Tim Raines, Eddie Murray, or Pudge Rodriguez compiled in their entire careers. He's a Mike Trout-quality full season away from passing Johnny Bench, Joe DiMaggio, Pete Rose, and maybe Nolan Ryan and Rod Carew, in career WAR.

Which would happen, given a Trout-quality ~162 games in the next calendar year, before he turns 30.

C: Jerry McNertney (4.0 WAR)
1B: Les Fleming (8.2 WAR)
2B: Rocky Bridges (2.8 WAR)
3B/Manager: Bill McKechnie (3.4 WAR)
SS: Edgar Renteria (32.4 WAR)
LF: Steve Kemp (19.5 WAR)
CF: Mike Trout (73.1 WAR)
RF: Kirk Nieuwenhuis (2.9 WAR)

SP: Adonis Terry (31.2 WAR)
SP: Motoshi Fujita (NPB pitcher, back-to-back Central League MVP awards, would be #1 if not for a very short career)
SP: Don Larsen (18.4 WAR)
SP: Art Houtteman (11.5 WAR)
SP: Wade LeBlanc (5.5 WAR)
RP: Danny Graves (5.6 WAR)

Umpire: Bruce Dreckman
Goofy pitching motion that probably never should have been legal: Carter Capps
Muppet or ballplayer?: Guy Sturdy
East German Secret Police or ballplayer?: Brock Stassi
Not that one: Jim Gray
Fun name: Sparrow Morton
Proto-Kieschnick, except this guy wasn't a big-league hitter *or* a big-league pitcher: Greg Pirkl

Sorry about the lack of dugouts recently - I was on a fairly impromptu vacation. Nothing more relaxing than laying on the beach wearing a mask.

(In fairness, it's light years better than sitting at my desk at work and wearing a mask.)

I hate to wish ill on players who don't play for the Yankees, but I'm glad Carter Capps is out of baseball. In a way, it's not his fault, since there's no way his hop-skip-and-a-jump delivery should ever have been allowed. On the other hand, he was still cheating.

Sexy tan lines there Dan.

Huh ... Trout's birthday does a better job of surrounding him with cromulence than the Angels do.

You can't beat an article that begins a sentence with the words "Babe Ruth banged".

Don Larsen had a full season of times at bat (653 PA/ 596 AB) over his career and had 14 HR, 72 RBI, and an 81 OPS+. In his nine seasons with the Angels, Mike Trout has had 16 teammate seasons exceeding those three figures. It's not really fair, since he hasn't had many teammates reach 653 PA or 596 AB, but it's still Don Larsen.
