Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-8-2011

Toledo News-Bee, August 8, 1911:

Yesterday Mr. Herrmann received word from Chattanooga that the famous Rube Benton, who has been recalled by the Reds to help out the pitching staff, is in the hospital, having been hit in the groin by a fast line drive.

My reaction upon reading about Benton’s injury was something like this.

Mr. Benton, Josias Manzanillo feels your pain.  Literally.

...and that's why this period in baseball history is known as the "Dead Ball Era".

Up at THT, today is also the silver anniversary of Rafael Palmeiro's debut. Aside from that, it lists the historical anniversary of numerous items, including: the 250,000th HR, #62, #4,191, Mattingly debuts, Kirk Gibson debuts, the last day Dick Allen leads the league in HR-RBI & AVG, the ump wrongly calls Agee safe, Mike Corkins makes the worst debut of anyone ever, Bert Campaneris plays all nine positions, Milwuakee signs Joe Torre, pitcher hits slam in 4-3 win but doesn't pick up the vicotry himself, and the smallest crowd in AL hisotry (23).

Trivia question
The smallest crowd in AL history missed history, as the first player to ever homer from both sides of the plate in one game did it before the 23 spectators. Can you name the player. It was an A's game if that helps. Click on the link above and scroll down to the 1916 item if you're curious to find out.

from rotoworld:

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Cardinals offered Albert Pujols a nine-year contract extension worth about $195 million last offseason.

That's a lot of years, but it's a per-annum discount -- I don't think even $25m/yr gets it done.

If only BTF had been around back then, we could have had another thread like this one.

If any Mets fans swing through here, I was wondering if you've gotten to see Mike Baxter play. It looks like he got about 20 ABs scattered across August. Think there is any chance he'll be able to stick around as a bench player for a few years?

He's a friend of a friend, and we had a few beers a few years back when he was toiling in the minors. He was a very pleasant fellow, but he looked like he was going to wash out of the minors before to long. I'm glad he's gotten to the bigs, but I wonder if he's got a shot to stick.
