Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-14-2020

Memphis News Scimitar, September 14, 1920:

To all pitchers desiring to keep Babe Ruth from leaning on their offerings the following is submitted as sound and safe:

1—Get a job pitching for the Yankees.
2—Failing in this throw the ball over the grand stand.
3—Induce Ruth to join the army or the navy.
4—Get him to go into the movies and quit baseball.
5—Quit baseball yourself.
6—Get you a job driving a garbage wagon.
7—Stay out of baseball entirely.
8—Or get a job in some league where Ruth doesn’t play.

These suggestions seem like they’d be mostly effective.

Sounds a lot like what NL pitchers were doing about Bonds in the early 2000's - if he comes up, walk him. Runners on? Walk him. Bases loaded? Walk him. Bases empty? Walk him. In 2004 he was intentionally walked 120 times and 'unintentionally intentionally walked' 112 more times. Just 41 K's vs 45 HR's. 609 OBP, 812 Slg%. Insane. In some ways it is lucky he did the drugs as otherwise we'd always wonder 'what if a real HOF quality player did it' instead of guys like Mark McGwire who were not HOF bound until they went nuts on the stuff (for the first half of his career he was below Fred McGriff, then suddenly was a god of home runs). You get video game numbers for a guy in his late 30's. Babe Ruth's top walk total was 170, 847 for Slg%, 545 for OBP - all in his 20's. At 39 (when Bonds had that insane year) Ruth hit 288/448/537 - not exactly terrible but not anywhere near Bonds figures at that age.
