Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-20-2019

Bridgeport Times, September 20, 1919:

WHITE SOX WILL DEMAND BIG INCREASES NEXT YEAR

When Skipper Gleason of the good ship White Sox starts marshaling his crew for a cruise on the 1920 pennant seas, he faces a task that will make his efforts in landing the 1919 American League pennant pale into insignificance. Almost unanimous will be the demands of his otherwise orderly mates for salary increases commensurate with their efforts in bringing the 1919 pennant to the Windy City.
...
“We’ve given Comiskey and the White Sox our best efforts all season, and some of us suffered a cut in salary over the previous season,” said one of the members of the team, “but there must be a substantial increase in my pay check, and I know I speak for the other fellows, before we’ll play on the South Side again. Players who do not compare in ability with men at the same positions on the Sox are drawing down more money a year than we are, and this must not be.”

Uh-oh.

Ian Desmond was at 18.1 career WAR three years ago, at which time the Rockies signed him to a five-year, $70 million contract. Under that contract, he's contributed -3.4 WAR.

No, Blyleven is on the April 6 team.

20 years ago today, Jon Lieber retired the first 20 batters he faced - and then allowed 5 runs in 7 pitches.

40 years ago today, Tony Solaita became the only person to homer for MTL & TOR in the same season

I know a lot of things about the Expos, but not that one. Of course, the only others to have even played for MTL & TOR in the same season are Omar Daal, Tom Hutton, Steve Nicosia, Mitch Webster and Ken Williams.

I just looked it up and was surprised to learn Rheal Cormier never played for both teams in the same season. And I was absolutely stunned to learn he never played for Toronto.

Am I crazy? Didn't the Jays have a Canadian lefty around that time? Maybe I'm misremembering.

edit: Denis Boucher! That's who I was thinking of. Also, Paul Spoljaric was a Blue Jays left-hander from Canada.

At a time when multiple players have been suspended for off-the-field conduct, why has no one investigated Willson Contreras for stealing a letter from the name of his fellow Chicago-area catcher, Welington Castillo?

It's Chicago. People take the L all the time.

Perhaps you're thinking of Denis Boucher or Paul Spoljaric. Probably the former, as he did play for bot the Expos and Jays, altough not in the same season.

I believe the Jays made the Boucher the centrepiece of a trade offer to the Expos in return for Dennis Martinez, in the early 90's. Can't imagine why the Expos didn't bite on that one...

If we were to make a team out of Expos/Jays players, building it like the birthday teams, and using career values, we'd obtain:

C: Charlie O'Brien, 9.7 WAR
1B: Al Oliver, 43.7 WAR
2B: Maicer Izturis, 11.3 WAR
3B: Tony Batista, 13.8 WAR
SS: Alex Gonzalez, 11.2 WAR
LF: Dave Martinez, 19.1 WAR
CF: Otis Nixon, 16.6 WAR
RF: Ron Fairly, 35.1 WAR

SP: John Candeleria, 41.9 WAR
SP: Ted Lilly, 21.1 WAR
SP: Miguel Batista, 12.6 WAR
SP: Tomo Ohka, 11.3 WAR
SP: Omar Daal, 8.6 WAR
RP: Jon Rauch, 6.5 WAR
RP: Graeme Lloyd, 5.2 WAR
RP: Bill Risley, 3.6 WAR
RP: Dale Murray, 2.5 WAR

Backup catchers: Rick Cerone (8.1 WAR), Darrin Fletcher (7.7 WAR)
Spare bats: Brad Wilkerson (11.0 WAR), David Segui (10.4 WAR)
Manager: Ken Macha
General Manager: Ken Williams

stealing a letter

This ship sailed when Paul Maholm got away with swiping a whole syllable from Casey McGehee.

Two players only played for the Jays and Expos- Tony Johnson (MON-1981 and TOR-1982) and Luis Lopez (TOR-2001 and MON-2004). Lopez only played 52 major league games, but he had a 20-year pro career with at least 2546 hits.
