Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-21-2020

Pittsburgh Press, September 21, 1920:

John A. Heydler and Ban B. Johnson, presidents of the National and American baseball leagues, are expected [in Chicago] tomorrow to testify before the county grand jury inquiring into alleged baseball gambling. Subpoenas for Rube Benton, New York Giants’ pitcher; Charles A. Comiskey, owner of the Chicago Whitesox; William Gleason, manager of the Sox; William L. Veek [sic], president of the Chicago Cubs, and Chicago baseball writers also were issued. Efforts to have Hal Chase, Heinie Zimmerman and Lee Magee, former players, testify will be made, it was said.

The world’s series of 1919 between the Whitesox and Cincinnati Nationals and the alleged “fixed” game of Aug. 31 between the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia will be investigated.

Drip. Drip. Drip.

"Fielder acknowledges a weight of 261, leaving unanswered the question of what he might weigh if he put his other foot on the scale." -- Bill James

And the greatest baseball player from Kansas State by a comfortable margin.

Anyone ever seen Auker on film? I remember reading his knuckles would get cut on the mound a lot due to his extreme submarine delivery.

Auker pitched 249 innings in his last season. Since 1921, the only pitchers with more IP in their last season are Sandy Koufax and Jim Tobin.

Yes, I read that book a long time ago. Very good.

RP: Danny Cox (9.3 WAR)

I loved him on those mid-to-late-'80s Cardinals pitching staffs when they were battling the "Pond Scum" Mets in the NL East.

In 1985 John Tudor, Joaquin Andujar, and Cox won 60 games for the Cardinals as they held off a 98-win Mets team for the division title.

Cox was never "great"---his 18-win 1985 was his best season, with 3.2 WAR---but he was a large, intimidating presence on the mound, with a big biker mustache and his cap pulled low. He was the starter in the infamous Game 6 against the Royals, leaving after 7 shutout innings, two innings before the Denkinger call at first.

And Danny Cox didn't just look like a tough guy, he was one.

If you search for him there's two really short clips (5 seconds/1 pitch) of his delivery on youtube.
