Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-22-2020

Seattle Star, September 22, 1920:

The chastity of baseball went on trial [in Chicago] today when the Cook county grand jury opened an active investigation of charges of “fixed games.”
...
Rube Benton, New York Giant pitcher, said to have been offered $750 by a Chicago player to throw a game; Heinie Zimmerman, Lee Magee and Hal Chase, former players, were also expected to be quizzed.
...
[Charles] Comiskey was expected to explain why bonus checks of eight White Sox players were held up last season and what his investigation of the world’s series scandal in 1919 produced.

My thought process as I scanned the career WAR leaderboard for today's Birthday Team, looking for a manager: "Cool, Bob Lemon. That makes it easy. Wait, is Larry Dierker a better choice? Bill Joyce had a better record than either Lemon or Dierker, should I pick him? Matheny won three consecutive division titles and a pennant. Probably Matheny.

Oh. Lasorda."

C: Bob Geren (1.1 WAR)
1B: Jeffrey Leonard (9.9 WAR)
2B: Alexei Ramirez (21.5 WAR)
3B: Bill Joyce (31.0 WAR)
SS: Carlos Correa (25.9 WAR)
LF: Vince Coleman (12.5 WAR)
CF: Ira Flagstead (18.0 WAR)
RF: Austin McHenry (10.0 WAR)

SP: Urban Shocker (58.7 WAR)
SP: Bob Lemon (48.2 WAR)
SP: Hooks Dauss (40.8 WAR)
SP: Larry Dierker (31.9 WAR)
SP: Mark Guthrie (9.2 WAR)
RP: Hal Dues (1.5 WAR)

Manager: Tom Lasorda
Ballplayer or Sesame Street theme park?: Grover Land
Fun names: Charlton Jimerson, Stover McIlwain
Backup infielder: Wally Backman (13.1 WAR)
Closer-in-waiting: James Karinchak (0.7 WAR)

#1 The obvious solution to avoid offending so many well qualified managers is to go with Wally Backman.

Bob Geren would probably manage a lot of birthday teams too. He's not even top five today.

If Urban Shocker's heart hadn't given out, he'd have been a good hall of fame pick. As it is, he's arguably a better HOF candidate than his fellow 1927 Yankees, Wait Hoyt and Herb Pennock, who did get the call.

I know I expected some "records" to be "broken" this year leading to endless blather about whether it's a real record or not (someone hitting .400, some starter with a 100% winning percentage). Is anything like that actually happening, that we know would be unsustainable in 162 games?

The current batting average leader is what, .370? Probably the highest since Tony Gwynn, not the highest since Ted Williams.

Austin McHenry is another giant "what-if?". He developed a brain tumor at 26 and died a few months later. By all accounts, he could do it all on the field.

The current leaders in average, OBP, slugging, OPS, and OPS+ wouldn't be the highs for this century. LeMahieu is hitting .3647, which would only be the highest since Joe Mauer hit .3652 in 2009.

Juan Soto is leading in OBP (.477), slugging (.674), OPS (1.151), and OPS+ (203). Those are the best since Barry Bonds- .480 OBP in 2007, and .812 SLG, 1.422 OPS, and 263 OPS+ in 2004.

is there a record for reliever ERA that uses 60 innings as a minimum? That's in danger if we scale the minimum down to 22 innings.

Ballplayer or Sesame Street theme park?: Grover Land

In 1911, Land had 112 PA, and put up an OPS+ of -3. That's bad.

Wow, Sesame Street is teaching kids about negative numbers now? Harsh.

Austin McHenry had 3,000 hits in one of my OOTP leagues.

Does Jeffrey Leonard lead this team in nicknames? Certainly has some of the best, if not the most. "Penitentiary Face" is definitely an all-timer. **shudder**
