Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-23-2021

Great Falls Tribune, September 23, 1921:

Trade Boycott Result of Baseball Rivalry

Because President Bradley of the Virginia league threw out several games played by the Wilson [North Carolina] club, on account of alleged violation of the salary limit, thus forcing Wilson out of first place in the pennant race, the Merchants’ association of [Wilson, NC] has gone on record as opposing trading with Virginia firms.

I’ll give them this much: They supported their local ballclub.

Today's Birthday Team has a pretty good pitching staff but not a great offense. Grant Johnson was one of the best hitters on the planet for a long while, but past him it's Matt Kemp and Jeff Cirillo carrying the team.

The corner outfield is sketchy at best; Greene and Morrison are infielders who weren't even good hitters for third basemen. There weren't a lot of options. Cirillo's also out of position as a first baseman, but he at least hit for average. If you get .320+ BA Jeff Cirillo, you're probably fine with him not having much power.

C: Terry McGriff (-0.6 WAR)
1B: Jeff Cirillo (34.5 WAR)
2B: Heinie Wagner (17.1 WAR)
3B: Jedd Gyorko (9.2 WAR)
SS/Manager: Grant Johnson (Negro Leagues star who's a glaring HoF omission)
LF: Jim Morrison (12.1 WAR)
CF: Matt Kemp (21.4 WAR)
RF: Willie Greene (3.1 WAR)

SP: Lefty Stewart (25.3 WAR)
SP: Jim Rooker (19.7 WAR)
SP: Pete Harnisch (17.9 WAR)
SP: Dennis Lamp (15.6 WAR)
SP: Hod Lisenbee (5.6 WAR)
RP: Joba Chamberlain (7.6 WAR)

General Manager: Woody Woodward
The LOOGYest LOOGY who ever LOOGYd: Tony Fossas (2.5 WAR)
Fun names: Pep Harris, Lino Donoso, Xavier Scruggs, Biff Schaller, Brian Asselstine
