Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-2-2021

Pittsburgh Press, September 2, 1921:

“Take it from me,” says Billy Murray, sage veteran of 40 baseball seasons, according to the Cincinnati Times-Star, “the big league team that pays a barrel of money for the Baltimore players is going to get stung. Stung extremely hard…The International League is a joke, a jest, almost a crime against baseball. It is made up of hasbeens, neverwases and hopeless cases. It contains seven jokes and one ball club.

Don’t hold back, Billy. Tell us how you really feel.

The 1921 Baltimore Orioles had a couple of 21-year-olds that were obviously useless. A left-handed pitcher named Robert Grove and an infielder named Max Bishop who definitely had no chance to play 12 years in the big leagues and get on base at a .423 clip. Best to let someone else buy them.

Lamar Johnson was a key cog in the 1977 South Side Hit Men White Sox, a team that added a bunch of journeymen sluggers and came out of nowhere to win 90 games. Those were the days when a team could earn a nickname without even making the playoffs.

apropos of nothing, in his last 162 games, Javy Baez has 222 K's and 24 BB's

Owner David Glass
LF Rex Hudler

These two people have done more to keep me from watching Royals games than every other person in history combined.

At my 2002 NL-only fantasy auction, the player I spent the most money on was Rich Aurilia. It did not go well.

The Giants have a proud history of employing slugging shortstops: Crawford, Aurilia, Alvin Dark, Travis Jackson, George Davis. But in between they've also employed Jose Pagan, Johnny LeMaster, and Jose Uribe (the Uribe who didn't have power) as a way of atoning to the NL.

Fred Payne gets today's Longoria Award.

This is a VERY shallow pitching staff. Additions to the roster:

SS Willy Adames, with Aurilia manning 2B
NEL George Carr in RF (oddly, he primarily played first base despite a speedy, low-power, high-BA offensive profile we'd associate with a 2B or CF)
C/P Christian Bethancourt
Relief (?) pitcher A.J. Minter

Yutaka Wada also deserves consideration - he played 17 seasons for the Hanshin Tigers from 1985 to 2001, hitting .291/.355/.357. A seven time All-Star, twice on the Best Nine, and three Gold Gloves at 2B. He was primarily a second baseman, but was also Hanshin's regular shortstop for two seasons, and played some 3B late in his career. No power (29 career home runs), and once went 1,929 at bats without a home run, an NPB record. Had 56 sacrifice bunts in 1988. The last member of Hanshin's 1985 Japan Series winning team to retire. Later managed the Tigers for four seasons.

In addition to that Billy Murray, there was a contemporary popular singer of the same name, who recorded literally thousands of songs in the acoustic recording era. Tiny Tim named him as an influence.
