Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-30-2021

Alaska Daily Empire, September 30, 1921:

Participation in a World Series is the ambition of every ball player. Yet Babe Ruth has it figured that if the Yankees get into the interleague title series this fall it will cost him something approaching $50,000.

For Ruth, participating in the annual blue ribbon event of baseball, will be prevented from barnstorming this season as he did last…He received as much as $3,500 per game for playing in semiprofessional parks.
All players participating in a World Series are barred that year from engaging in any barnstorming expeditions.

That’s a weird rule. Speaking as a Cleveland fan, I really wish the Babe had been able to barnstorm during the 1921-22 offseason.

A heck of a pitching staff on today's Birthday Team. Also, as Rennie's Tenet pointed out a couple years ago, it's entirely possible that Jamie Romak is the best first baseman born on September 30. He's hit .274/.376/.533 with 155 home runs in five KBO seasons.

Dave Magadan is currently the hitting coach for the Rockies, which makes me think he's not a very good hitting coach. As a player, Magadan walked a lot, but the Rockies are 12th in the NL in walks drawn. He also had very little power - and the Rox are 11th in the NL in homers, which is inexcusable for a team in Coors Field.

Geez, Dave, if you had to pick a trait to impart to the team, couldn't you have picked the other one?

Gee, time flies. I was wondering what team Seth Smith is on and I find out it’s the old timers team. How did he get to be 39????

Did the OT:Covid thread really get locked after 14000 posts, many of them interesting and informative?

Let me hope that it's only because the topic got too large and will be resurrected in another thread.

Kenley Jansen now just needs 89 saves to get to 4th place on the all time saves list. Kimbrel is the only active player ahead of him, and he's on a downward trend.

Speaking as a Cleveland fan, I really wish the Babe had been able to barnstorm during the 1921-22 offseason.

Don't worry, he did it anyway. (And got suspended for a month in '22 as a result.)
