Rangers announce seven roster cuts, suspension of LHP Yohander Mendez

Jumping ahead in this:

General manager Jon Daniels announced Wednesday the club has indefinitely suspended pitcher Yohander Mendez for a breach of his contract.

Daniels said Mendez sought unauthorized outside medical care with someone who was not on the Rangers’ approved medical practitioners list. When asked to elaborate, Daniels declined.

The suspension represents a second marred spring for Mendez—he sustained an elbow injury last spring that kept him out until early September. In just under five innings in 2019, Mendez posted a 5.79 ERA with eight strikeouts.

Mendez yet another reliever who's pitched parts of 4 seasons that I've never heard of. The suspension is a bit odd -- he's barely over 1 year of service time so they can just release/DFA him and they can just stick him in the minors. So this is to keep control of his future service time while saving the min salary during his suspension. (It looks like he's out of options.)

Anybody know if a player has been successfully suspended for seeking outside advice and how long they were suspended for? We looked at these clauses in the discussion of the Ellsbury situation and my memory is that the clause is pretty vague just saying the player is liable for fine or suspension. It seemed to be up to the team but surely the player/union must be able to bring this in front of an arbitrator.

Walt, I've never seen it come up before except in the Ellsbury situation, and a quick Google search doesn't yield any other results.

I don't know whether there will be a grievance, but assume they can't have him on "indefinite" suspension for very long or else there definitely will be.

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply Mendez would file a grievance -- it was "indefinite" that struck me. (1) the key question of who decides how long is the appropriate punishment; (b) "indefinite" by what standard? Indefinite would make sense in a "the suspension stops when we are convinced the player is no longer doing what we want them to stop doing" but the alleged consultation would have taken place some time ago. Maybe he's still doing whatever quackery the other doc suggested? Maybe the Rangers can make the claim that the other advice did further harm and he's suspended until he recovers from that harm?

Plenty of players were suspended for seeking outside medical advice from Biogenesis.

So you got your righthander pitchers, your lefties, the venditters, and now we can add the yohanders.
