Rangers prospect Kumar Rocker to have Tommy John surgery

Texas Rangers pitching prospect Kumar Rocker, a top-10 pick in each of the past two MLB drafts, has a torn ligament in his right elbow and will need Tommy John surgery.

Rangers general manager Chris Young said Tuesday that Rocker had an MRI after his start last week at Single-A Hickory. The surgery probably will be later this week

Rocker was the third overall pick by the Rangers last summer, when the right-hander was drafted again a year after concerns over a physical led to the former Vanderbilt standout going unsigned by the New York Mets as the 10th overall pick.

“This was an acute injury; it was completely different than what we saw in our post-draft exams and MRI,” Young said. “This was an injury sustained pitching for us in his last start.”

Also, Rocker prospect John Kumar...nahh, I already did this joke.

Seriously, tho...is there a database somewhere that shows how many of these surgeries have been performed, and how many of them were "successful"? How do these (now ex-)athletes deal after their careers are over?

This sucks. I was (am) rooting for Rocker to have a successful career for the Rangers because I admired their ballsy move to draft him about 20 spots above where everybody thought he’d go.

So he should be back to make a few starts at the end of 2024 then hit the ground running in 2025. If he's the talent he seems to be I wouldn't be at all surprised if he's a Major Leaguer at some point in 2025. He'll only be 25 years old, not like he's cashing in his prime here. That assumes everything goes well which of course is not a certainty.

I mean, Boras so far has been mostly right, no? The rumors were about his shoulder / velocity drop, not his elbow. Rocker was ######' dealing in the sally league and probably had an outside shot at reaching the bigs as a late season call-up this season. Sometimes #### happens, but Rocker was proving out as a top pitching prospect worthy of a high pick. . .

The surgeries are always successful, it's the rehab that fails, according to the surgeons, anyway.

Hope he doesn't get fat eating burgers with Harold during his rehab stint.

Mets let Rocker and deGrom go, Rangers can't believe their good fortune.
