Rangers reportedly agree to four-year, $56 million deal with Jon Gray

Sunday ended up being a huge day for the Rangers. They landed shortstop Marcus Semien on a seven-year, $175 million late in the afternoon and now the news is they’ve agreed to a four-year, $56 million deal with free agent starting pitcher Jon Gray, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN.

The Rangers lost 102 games last season and don’t have a bunch of young talent on the cusp of breaking through at the major-league level. They also had payroll pretty much down as low as it could get heading into the offseason with a new ballpark and an ownership group that has spent lavishly on payroll before.

Do the math and it seems like the front office plan this offseason is to spend their way back into relevance.

Gray will provide desperately needed rotation help. In seven years with the Rockies, the former number three overall pick went 53-49 with a 4.59 ERA and 1.34 WHIP, but keep in mind he’s pitching his home games there in Coors Field. He posted a 107 ERA+, which adjusts for defense and ballpark along with a 3.91 FIP, both figures indicating he’s a lot better pitcher than the raw ERA indicates.

56 shades of Gray?

Well, they're spending their way to 70-92 next year, which at least means an only-slightly-less-than-even chance of seeing them win on a given night. Not much of a marketing strategy but a couple of new bobbleheads to collect … I'm not knocking it. It was tough to sustain interest after their fire sale in mid-season 2021, not that they were riveting before that.

I think this is a good gamble. Was hoping the Cubs or Mets would go after him.

Not sure Simien and Gray mean anything substantive in the W/L column but at least they're trying.

#2 perhaps a bit like the 2004 Tigers who, after winning just 43, signed Pudge, Fernando Vina (oops), Urbina (it's not a personality contest!) and Rondell White (solid enough) and allowed the Ms to gift them Carlos Guillen and bounced all the way back to 72 wins, 71 the next year then made the WS. (They were also clever enough to draft Verlander in 2004.)

Multiple outlets report that the Rangers have signed Corey Seager to a 10-year, $325 million contract.

What’s the better deal: Matz 4/44 or Gray 4/56?

Matz. Gray has more theoretical upside I guess.

Rockies didn't give him the QO, right?
