Rays open to trading ace Snell

According to multiple sources, the Rays have told other clubs that they’re open to the idea of trading Blake Snell, presenting a realistic possibility that a deal could be consummated this offseason.

A source noted that Tampa Bay is not actively shopping Snell, who has three years and $42 million remaining on his five-year, $50 million extension, but given the financial losses the Rays endured during the pandemic-impacted 2020 season, trading the 27-year-old represents the club’s best chance to create some much-needed flexibility.

Snell will earn $10.5 million in 2021, $12.5 million in 2022, and $16 million in 2023.

He’ll bring a pretty penny

“Step right up with your best prospect package! We’re offering three years of a bargain-priced starter who can, um, totally pitch more than 5 innings at a time!”

I almost wonder if Snell has asked for a trade. Cash stuck to the script by pulling him, and it was for Snell to be annoyed. Of course, the script is why the Rays got there in the first place. While I am really just jealous of the Ray's success, I can understand why they would trade him, and why he would want to be traded. Nonetheless, it makes me sad for baseball.

The key question is, how good will the prospects be at slapping their dicks?

This where I am. About 20 teams seem to rotate being a farm team for those teams in markets where they can ignore their mistakes and keep grabbing players on contracts that smaller market teams have difficulty affording.

Kind of crazy that 3/$42 is too expensive for the Rays. And they declined a $15 million option on Morton, right?

It's funny how the Yankees not being able to have fans has ruined the Rays' finances. :-)

If anything, given they don't rely a lot on local revenues anyway, the Rays should possibly have an easier time adapting to 2020's hit on revenues. They would have gotten their 1/60th share of everybody else's local TV revenue plus 1/30th of whatever the playoffs and MLBAM generated.

I think the small market teams lost all their revenue sharing didn’t they? Wasn’t that their biggest revenue source ?
