Rays promote Neander, reach multiyear deal

The Rays agreed to a multiyear extension with Erik Neander on Wednesday and named him president of baseball operations, promoting him from his previous title of general manager/senior vice president and ensuring that their top baseball operations official will remain right where he wants to be.

Neander, 38, began his tenure with the Rays as a baseball operations intern in 2007, was hired full-time later that year and has worked for Tampa Bay ever since. This is his fourth season as the organization’s top-ranking baseball official, and during that time he’s overseen the creation of a Major League roster that is once again among the best in the American League, along with a Minor League system that ranks among the best in baseball.

“It was a dream opportunity then, and it’s a dream opportunity now,” Neander said on a Zoom call Wednesday evening. “There’s been plenty of mistakes and misfires and growth along the way, but also a lot of wins. And I think with this, I can guarantee that the mistakes and the growth will certainly continue, and it’s our goal and belief that our collective efforts will lead to our best wins still being ahead of us.”

Wasn't he one of the 3 guys Jim Bowden said the Mets had to hire, to turn themselves around. Another of the 3 was Theo, and Falvey was the 3rd. Nice bargaining chip Bowden provided to those 3 guys, as he said the current Mets owner needed to make whomever he chose the highest paid GM in baseball history.

The Mets sure dodged that bullet.

Guess they wanted to avoid arb, and definitely is past the super-2 deadline.

Mets fans wants Theo or David Stearns because he grew up a Mets fan. I'd be happy just getting rid of Sandy Alderson.

I knew I couldn't tell you the name of the guy who took over for Friedman but I would have told you I'd recognize it when I saw it. Nope.

Would you recognize the name Matt Silverman? Because he's the guy who took over for Friedman.

Stearns is the guy for the Mets. Why does Theo risk his legacy? Brewers won’t let Stearns go apparently so the Mets might have to send some talent to the brewers to make that happen

Now they just need to coax Talmadge Nunnari out of retirement so we can have the first Neander-Tal double play.

It's nice that GMs and Exec. VPs have finally become as anonymous as field managers. I really miss the days when baseball had some personality. Management by I-bankers and consultants bores me to tears.

The best single thing MLB could do is enforce the 15 second pitch count. Second best would be to limit each front office to five employees beyond the manager and coaches.
