Red-hot Oswaldo Cabrera joining Estevan Florial as call-up to reeling Yankees

Oswaldo Cabrera and Estevan Florial are expected to be called up from Triple-A on Wednesday, ahead of the series finale against the Rays. The Yankees, who have lost 11 of their last 13 games, had not announced any roster moves as of Wednesday morning. But The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed Florial’s promotion, and Cabrera appeared to confirm his own call-up (which was first reported by El Extra Base) in an Instagram post late Tuesday night.

While Florial fills a need in center field in the midst of Aaron Hicks’ extended struggles, Cabrera can provide defensive versatility and a hot bat. It’s possible he could be a roster replacement for DJ LeMahieu, who has missed the last three games with inflammation in his toe and could need a stint on the injured list, though manager Aaron Boone was still holding out hope Tuesday night he could avoid it.

The 23-year-old Cabrera, an infielder/outfielder who would be making his MLB debut, has been on a tear since missing two months earlier this season with a shoulder injury. In his last 25 games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Cabrera was batting .330 with seven home runs, eight steals and a 1.040 OPS.

Cabrera has played almost all of his minor league games at second base, shortstop and third base, but he has also added the corner outfield spots to his repertoire this summer.

The corresponding roster moves:
The Yankees have placed closer Clay Holmes on the 15-day injured list due to back spasms, as one of a series of transactions. Miguel Andujar and Tim Locastro were optioned to Triple-A, while Ron Marinaccio, Estevan Florial, and Oswaldo Cabrera were all called up from Triple-A.
A healthy Homes, along with Giancarlo Stanton, will likely be more help than the other moves, although Marinaccio has pitched quite well in limited MLB action, putting up a 2.03 ERA in 26.2 innings this season. The brain trust may have been more impressed with others’ ‘stuff’ than Marinaccio’s results.

the latter guy was a pure "only guy not out of options" move.

Does "reeling" rank above or below "feebly sliding" on the futility scale?

I know it's how the system works but Andujar signed with the Yanks way back in 2011, has played parts of the last 6 seasons in the majors ... and still has options left. And whether by design or just the random luck of all the ups/downs/struggles, looks like he might have gotten screwed out of super-2 status in 2021 by maybe a week or two of service time. (Since we're now reporting service time, it would be nice to have that stored and displayed every year of a player's career ... it would be great to have it updated as the season goes on but that's not such a big deal.)

the latter guy was a pure "only guy not out of options" move.

Of course he might have been up as a pure "only healthy guy already on the 40-man" move.
