Red Sox Give Varitek Spring Training Invite

The Boston Red Sox have invited Jason Varitek to spring training as a non-roster player, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman.

Probably the Yankees were seriously spooked by the Varitek invite and had to counter it with the trade and the Kuroda signing.

I'm surprised he'd accept, though. You'd think he could get a backup job somewhere.

He will be 40 so not sure he gets anything but an NRI from anybody else even though he's been perfectly good as a backup the last couple of years.

But most likely just that he would prefer to stay with the Red Sox if he plays at all and this gives him the best chance of that. And if he does well in spring training but the Red Sox don't want him, then he'll still be able to catch on with another team if he wants to.
