Red Sox open to dealing these veterans at trade deadline

Boston is “listening” to trade offers involving their veteran players, with designated hitter J.D. Martinez, catcher Christian Vazquez and pitcher Nathan Eovaldi among the candidates to be moved ahead of Tuesday’s MLB trade deadline, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported Saturday night.

Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom insisted Tuesday that his club is “trying to make the postseason” and declined to label the Red Sox as buyers or sellers at the deadline. But as Boston continues its tailspin—the team is 5-17 since July 5 and now sits 4.5 games out of a wild card spot—selling seems like the best course of action.

Martinez, Vazquez and Eovaldi all are set to hit unrestricted free agency this offseason, so it makes sense for the Red Sox to seek some return for each player. It appears they have suitors, as well: The New York Mets reportedly have shown interest in Martinez and Vazquez (even sending a scout to Fenway Park on Friday night) while the Los Angeles Dodgers reportedly are eyeing Martinez as well.

The Mets are a team to watch closely, as the Red Sox have shown past interest in New York infield prospect Mark Vientos, per SNY’s Andy Martino.

Boston assured shortstop Xander Bogaerts he won’t be traded before Tuesday, while fellow All-Star Rafael Devers likely is staying as well.

From what I've read about Vientos, the long-term fit at third base is questionable, but the Mets have been trying him in left field, and that appears to be working. Boston's prospect strengths are infield (Mayer, Casas, Yorke are all in BA's top five at their positions in all of baseball), with Devers seemingly the young veteran the team is most like to break the bank for. The team is sorely lacking in legit outfield prospects, especially anybody that might be ready for the bigs before 2024. So if Vientos can handle left field, that would really help address a weakness in the organization. I'm all for that, as a Red Sox fan.

Frankly, I'm surprised anybody is hot on the trail for Martinez: Since June 16th (33 games played), Martinez is hitting .186/.241/.279 with one home run, 8/33 BB/K ratio, no defensive value.

That sounds like a guy who's hiding an injury.

Possibly. To me, it just sounds like a bad stretch from a past-his-prime player. Either way, I would assume it lessens the probability of him being traded.

I would assume it merely lessens the probability of Boston receiving a top prospect *when* he is traded. If the Sox are determined to be in sell mode, what's the point of holding onto him for two inconsequential months?

They are not determined to be in sell mode. They're in the awkward "listening" mode.

Eh, it sounds like little more than an effort to retain leverage.

He's not hiding it, everyone knows he's been playing hurt. (He had a good game yesterday. He swung the bat well, almost hit a HR to straightaway center, and had another double.)

YIL that Martinez hasn't played the OF this year.

Then why hasn't he been given two weeks on the DL to try and get well?

Getting Vazquez instead of Contreras is a Wilpon move.

He took 4 games off (back spasms), and then they put him back in and he looks like he's ok. Who knows why they didn't put him on the IL?

BTW, snapper, since you posted about the guy who claimed to make a birdie a round, I started counting my birdies. 15 in 32 rounds since 5/23, but in July, I had 9 in 15 rounds. So, I would say that I make .5 to .75 birdies a round.
