Boston among teams interested in Mets first baseman Dominic Smith

The Red Sox are among the teams that have discussed first baseman/outfielder Dominic Smith in trade talks with the Mets, according to a report from FanSided’s Robert Murray.

Smith, 27, has yo-yoed between Triple-A and the majors this year, appearing in 58 games for New York and 15 for Triple-A Syracuse. In the majors, the lefty swinger owns a .194 average with zero homers, 17 RBIs and .560 OPS in 152 plate appearances. He’s having a down year after also struggling in 2021 but is just two years removed from an excellent 2020 (.316 average, .993 OPS in 50 games). He also had a good offensive season in 2019 (.282, .881 OPS in 89 games).

Smith has split his time in the majors between first base (187 games) and left field (182 games) but has not played the outfield in the majors this year. He has lost favor with the Mets, who have Pete Alonso at first base, Mark Canha in left and J.D. Davis in the designated hitter role this season. Smith is a change-of-scenery candidate who is under team control through 2024.

It’s no secret why the Red Sox are looking at adding a first baseman. In the first half of the season, Boston’s first basemen rank last in the majors in OPS (.604), 29th in average (.209) and 28th in homers (seven). The platoon of Bobby Dalbec and Franchy Cordero hasn’t cut it and Triston Casas has missed months with an ankle injury, leading chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom to consider moves at the position.

The Nationals Josh Bell (.311/.390/.504, 159 OPS+) would be a far better option, although at a considerably higher price, if Boston is serious about upgrading at 1st.

I'd rather do some infield roulette, once Hernandez is healthy. Devers to 1B, Hernandez to 2B, Story to SS, Bogaerts to 3B. It won't happen, but Cora is the one manager who might be able to sell them on it. It puts each guy at his best defensive position...and leaves Duran in CF, then go get a corner outfielder to pair with Verdugo.

Sounds like a Red Sox already.

It's unclear that 1B would be Devers' best defensive position. He might actually be worse at 1B.

Yeah he has power but can't make contact and is now injured. He will fit right in.

I was thinking the same thing as Clapper--Bell looks like the best option for a 1b upgrade. He's a few agent at the end of the year and the Nats are going nowhere so he's probably available.

Why try to improve a position with OPS .604 by acquiring a player with OPS .560? One who the stats say is a crummy fielder? Pass

Other candidates besides Bell:

Pricey: Christian Walker ARI; Nate Lowe TEX ... both pricey only because they have so much service time left

Cheap: Either of the Marlins guys (Jesus Aguilar, Garrett Cooper) would be a serviceable half of a platoon.

I didn't check the DH lists, maybe somebody there who can handle 1B defensively.

Dom's a crummy outfielder but he's fine at 1B - bb-ref has him at 3 runs below average for his career at 1b, and 2 above average since his rookie season.

Hunter Dozier if you don't mind him missing the series in Toronto!

He twisted his ankle. Eligible to come off the IL on Tuesday.

I think the Red Sox are feinting toward Dominic Smith in the hopes of getting a better deal on Josh Bell. Unless the Red Sox play so badly that they fall out of the wild card race, they will make the deal for Bell.

The problem isn’t Dom’s ankle. The problem is Dom sucks.

Don’t see how that works with multiple teams likely to be pursuing Bell. Boston may be the contender most in need of a 1st base upgrade (.604 OPS at 1st), but they aren’t the only one.

Dom is 27 and has been marginally below replacement level for ~1400 PA. If they want more than Jay Groome's dad, the answer is No.
