Red Sox. White Sox. Blue Sox? Manny Is Still Manny.

“I’m trying to get my timing back, see some live pitching and going from there,” Ramirez said. Asked for a scouting report on his current self, he admitted, “You don’t know what you’re going to get.”

The goal is for Ramirez to be Sydney’s everyday designated hitter, and he won’t be judged on a curve despite his age. Bring up that number and Dobb is quick to note another: .413, which was Ramirez’s average over 23 games with the Kochi Fighting Dogs, an independent-league team in Japan, in 2017.

“He’s only had a couple of cuts, but you wouldn’t think it was a 48-year-old body,” Barclay said after Ramirez first joined the team. “He’s fit, he’s focused. I know from speaking to him there’s no way — failure’s not an option here for him. He’s about as focused as you’d see an 18-year-old kid playing the game.”

As for what Ramirez gets out of all this, the answer is a place to play for an aging baseball junkie who declares that the sport “isn’t just a game, it’s life!” on his Twitter bio. Since his big-league career abruptly and effectively ended with a second positive test for performance-enhancing drugs in 2011, Ramirez has played in the minors, his native Dominican Republic, Taiwan and Japan.

“I could’ve gone to the Dominican Republic, where I’ve played, but I wanted to try something different,” said Ramirez. “It’s awesome. The city is beautiful. The city’s on the water. It’s unbelievable.”

Bad news from the Blue Sox website from last Thurs:

Sydney Blue Sox wishes to announce to its fans and stakeholders, as well as the supporters of the Australian Baseball League and the sport in Australia, that Manny Ramirez will be unavailable to play, and will be unavailable for selection to play for the Blue Sox, until further notice.

With Manny’s express consent, we advise that his unavailability is due to ongoing sensitive and confidential medical reasons. While these matters are serious so as to directly impact Manny’s ability to play in the ABL at this time, please be assured that the issues are not life-threatening. These matters are unrelated to COVID-19, and Manny’s circumstances pose no risk to the health of anyone else. Manny has been quietly managing these issues for some time.

There's also a small (for now) outbreak in Sydney with medium restrictions back in so I don't know if the games will be going forward nor when it would be advised for me to travel to Sydney to see them anyway.

Ah ha! As Walt mentions, we've had a little outbreak here in Sydney's northern beaches, about 85 people I think now. But the tracers have yet to determine who patient 0 is. That first case that brought it back into the community (they know it's an overseas strain from the USA; thx USA!) from overseas after weeks of no community transmission.

And now it's obvious...Manny still being Manny....

Wow, I remember when Rickey Henderson was the model for the guy who just refuses to stop playing, but it’s looking like Manny is beating him in that regard.

#4 I assume Rickey! still lets everybody in organized baseball know that he's interested in playing another year. It's just no longer news.

ABL's Sydney Blue Sox release Manny Ramirez amid disjointed season

"The level of investment to get him here meant this was never a PR stunt,'' Cobb said. "It was never was our intention to have him NOT participate in the ABL this season.''

Ramirez did not make an appearance with the Blue Sox, who played just two games -- on Dec. 17 and 18 -- before a coronavirus outbreak in Sydney and subsequent border and travel restrictions prevented the club from competing.

Cobb said he was unable to comment further on Ramirez or the undisclosed medical condition, adding that the club was "doing everything we can to get restarted.''
