Reds get LHP Minor, deal closer Garrett to KC

For the third time in four days, the Reds have traded a veteran member of the club. This time, it was lefty reliever Amir Garrett who was dealt to the Royals on Wednesday for left-handed pitcher Mike Minor and cash.

In 28 starts last season, Minor was 8-12 with a 5.05 ERA. The 34-year-old is set to earn $10 million in 2022 with a $13 million club option for 2023 that has a $1 million buyout.

Garrett, 29, endured his worst season in 2021 while posting a 6.04 ERA in 63 appearances.

lolwut? I assume KC is paying for Minor's entire salary?

edit: I mean, I am ecstatic they traded away Garrett, in a "Great trade! Who'd we get?" kind of way.

Supposedly the Royals cleared salary to pursue Montas. So they're sending cash, but the Reds are still paying most of Minor's salary. So I don't get it from Cincy's perspective.

minor and garrett are both better, i think, than we're giving them credit for but -- the clear takeaway here for me is that i don't know what cincy is doing. wonder how much of these choices involves who derek johnson thinks he can improve?

I think the Reds will execute a strategy like the brewers have done. Wait, wait and wait and then add cheaper (albeit less good) assets right before the season. Maybe the script isn’t written yet - let’s see what else they do.

So rather than have Wade Miley and Amir Garrett, they decided to have Mike Minor, and save about $2-3M? I don't get that.

Javy Baez hates Amir Garrett. Baez isn't a hothead sort of player -- he's excitable in what is for some an obnoxious way but not a nasty one. HE's always laughing and smiling with other players. Except for Amir Garrett. It goes back to a bad HBP and some nasty words a couple of years ago but carried over to a time when Garrett hit Rizzo and Javy stormed out of the dugout to go after him. And last year, coming to the plate, Javy just started screaming at Garrett pretty much non-stop, smacked the first pitch he saw for a walk-off hit, screaming at Garrett the whole time down the line. So Tigers-Royals games just got a bit more "interesting."

I’m willing to see how it plays out with Miley before saying this was stupid. David Dahl was a “stupid” non-tender last year….until he wasn’t. Teams know things about their own players

Remember, they traded Sonny Gray away for nothing. Well, an 18 year old in rookie ball... So, they really traded away Garrett and Gray to save about 5 million. Plus, they got rid of Garrett which is addition by subtraction.
