Report: 11 umpires have opted out of the 2020 season

Jon Heyman reports that 11 MLB umpires have opted out of the 2020 season or have otherwise declined to participate. He says “some are said to have family members who are ill.” The umpires’ identities are not yet known.

Umpires, like players, have the right to opt-out with full pay if they are in a high risk group due to preexisting health conditions. Umpires can, obviously, be older as well, so age factors into it for some as well. Also like players, umpires who are themselves not high risk can opt-out if they have concern for the health of family members, though they will forego paychecks.

Recently, one umpire who is high risk — Joe West — made headlines for not only choosing not to opt-out but for also giving voice to COVID-19 denialism, questioning official statistics about infections and deaths.

In case you're wondering, they are: Brian Gorman, Phil Cuzzi, Gerry Davis, Tom Hallion, Jerry Layne, Fieldin Culbreth, Mike Winters, Sam Holbrook, Kerwin Danley, and Scott Barry.

It's actually only 10 opting out- Greg Gibson is hurt and was going to miss the year anyway. Paul Emmel may also miss the season due to a pre-COVID injury.

<sigh> Of course, Angel Hernandez and C.B. Bucknor would stick around for the fun that will be whatever gets played of the 2020 MLB season.

And with 8 crew chiefs out, it's very likely Angel will have his own crew this year.

One of my good friends and HS teammates has been umpiring semi-professionally for about a dozen years.. a couple years ago, he decided he wanted to make it full-time career and took a "full-time" (where this basically means the 'season') job umpiring for the state HS athletics association.

Last year, he had finally saved up enough to attend the academy that basically functions as a feeder to the "Minor League Baseball Umpire Development" org that basically makes the 'recommendations' which comprise the pool of umpires to the minors... and made the rec list, which meant he was almost assured of at least a substitute ump job in the minors, if not a full-time job pending the available openings.

Then came Covid...

Really sucks for him - he's working for a local umpiring association that handles some college and semi-pro leagues now, so he's still pursuing the career, but I was really looking forward to doing a minor league road trip this summer to watch him work some games...
