Report: Blue Jays opt for extensive Rogers Centre renovation instead of new stadium

The organization is expected to finalize an overhaul of the Rogers Centre, which would include a renovation of the lower bowl, with the goal of modernizing the in-game experience, according to Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi. The plan hasn’t been finalized, but the renovations are expected to cost $200-250 million, per Don Muret of Venues Now, who was first to report the news.

Details are expected to be finalized in January 2021, with a subsequent unveiling of the plan to follow, Davidi reports.

Davidi previously reported that the Blue Jays had explored plans to look into the viability of a new stadium, but there are some impediments in the way — primarily that the Rogers Centre is currently zoned on land owned by Canada Lands Company, with exclusive zoning designation for stadium-use only. If Rogers were to build a new venue outside of where the current stadium exists, both Canada Lands and the City of Toronto could mount opposition.

I read that as "the Blue Jays failed to sucker a government into paying for most of a new stadium so redirected the money they'd have had to contribute into renovations."

If there's one thing the in-game experience needs, it's to be modernized.

They should just make some prefab inflatable stadiums, easy peasy to swap a new one in for the old one when the latter gets a few too many beer stains.

reminds me of one of my favourite Larsen cartoons about the "short lived fiasco of the inflatable fort" which of course was surrounded by Indians with bows and arrows. It was simplistic brilliance.

Given how much embodied carbon is in the existing facility, it's also a much more responsible move to renovate, rather than build new, which would use up a bunch more carbon both in the new construction and in the demo of the existing. While the renovation will add carbon, it will be a fraction of what new construction/demo would add.

In general, if a structure can be re-used, rather than demolished, it yields huge benefits by not adding unnecessarily to the carbon load.

Building construction and operation creates about 40% of the Earth's total human-produced carbon footprint, so not building makes a big difference.
