Report: Cubs, SS Andrelton Simmons agree to one-year, $4M deal

The Chicago Cubs have agree to terms with free agent shortstop on a one-year, $4 million deal, according to a report by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Simmons appeared in 131 games last season for the Minnesota Twins and posted a .223 average with three homers and 31 RBIs.

The 32-year-old is a four-time Gold Glove award winner.

Simmons has also appeared with the Los Angeles Angels and Atlanta Braves over the course of his 10-season MLB career.

I mean, Simmons is still an elite defensive player, so I guess. Will be watching for Simmons to be used as anything other than a defensive specialist, though, because this move does reek of further creeping Hendryism.

Somebody has to play SS. Last year, after Baez left, that person was Sergio Alcantara who put up a 71 OPS+ and average defense -- 0.5 WAR, -0.4 WAA so a 1-WAR pace. The other option is Nico Hoerner and it is a fair question as to what they have planned for him. Andrelton's offense cratered last year but still put up 1.5 WAR, 0 WAA with a good chance at an offensive bounceback to "lousy." It's $4 M, what do you expect? (The Cubs are going nowhere and are farther away from competitive than even a Correa signing could fix.) The Cubs have a fair amount of what they hope are good IF prospects so a placeholder seems like a fine idea.

Other questions -- do the Cubs know something about Madrigal's injury that we don't? (i.e. they need Hoerner for 2B) Are they sensibly hedging their bet on Wisdom? I gotta admit that Simmons, Hoerner, Wisdom, Madrigal, Bote, Alcantara seems a bit of overkill. But no tears will be shed over who doesn't survive spring training ... or maybe Hoerner's slated for CF?

This seems like a steal and a half to me. Am I crazy? What don't I know?

Blech. And he's unlikable.

Also, the defense might not be what it was, due to age and injuries. Also, he literally can't hit.

EDIT: Yeah, $4 mil isn't terrible. But why the rush to sign him now? Why is he the first position player off the board in FA 2.0? Wouldn't this deal be there in a week or two?

Seems like a great signing. Very good chance of 2 WAR. Outside chance of 4 WAR.

Nico probably is a super utility guy. If he has to have a full time position, and the bat/health keep up, he should be a 2B - arguably a plus defensively there. Madrigal...is what, a DH who stands by 2b? All those guys are overkill, and arguably there's 1.5 good players there so might as well mix and match and hope something works out. If you could combine Madrigal's contact skills with Bote's exit velocity, Wisdom's power, and Nico's defense, you probably have yourself an All-Star 2b (or I guess Simmons D at SS and then you have Correa though, right?). Not sure what of Alcantara you want to add...I think he's kinda fast.

Simmons is one of history's great defensive players, and you got him for four bucks. I know he's not Correa, but this is terrific.

I think Sergio Alcantara is great name!

Or somebody has to back-up our 5-headed Correa.

I'll admit my initial reaction was along the lines of 5, 7 and 9. But I hadn't realized Andrelton's offense was that bad last year; I hadn't realized that Alcantara and Hoerner have both done OK at SS in their brief careers; I'd forgotten about Madrigal. But if Andrelton brings the glove, it's a fine signing and he'll give the Cubs starters (who are the Cubs starters besides Hendricks and Stroman?) confidence to throw the ball over the plate.

As to why so quick ... one possibility is that this was agreed shortly before the lockout started, just couldn't get the i's dotted in time.

As a Braves fan, I can do no less than wish that things go well for Andrelton.

Because anti-vaxxers are homicidal.

Simmons is just Adam Everett at this point, right?
