Report: Las Vegas also inquired about Arizona Diamondbacks

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A report says Las Vegas followed neighboring Henderson in talks with the Arizona Diamondbacks last year, possibly about moving the Major League Baseball team from Phoenix to southern Nevada.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports it obtained documents showing the team and Las Vegas signed a nondisclosure agreement in August 2018, two weeks after signing a similar pact with Henderson.

The Review-Journal reported the Henderson contact last month, but said discussions stalled.

My apologies for this being the link- the Review-Journal article is pay-walled for me.

Turning to the actual content- is it just me, or is the moving of a MLB team to Las Vegas a bit alarming, given how close MLB has gotten with gambling interests lately?

Legalized gambling doesn’t endanger the integrity of the game, it protects it. Almost all point shaving scandals are first unearthed and reported by sharps and bookies.

I wonder what the Dbacks were trying to shake out of these cities.

Btw, AZ owner Ken Kendricks fancies himself a libertarian, helping fund the Goldwater Institute and such, so watching him hit up governments for money is worthy of eye-rolling.

There are no libertarians when free money is to be had.

There's nothing about having a team in Las Vegas that makes any concerns about gambling or integrity of the game worse. People can (and do) still bet on baseball whether MLB is in Vegas or not. I'm not sure what people are concerned will suddenly happen that isn't already happening.

What is concerning to me is, especially in the current rabbit-ball atmosphere, having a team in Las Vegas would be like having a second Coors field, or even worse. We don't need even more HR in the game.

Any stadium in LV is going to be temperature controlled and have a retractable roof like Chase Field.

The elevation in LV. is 2000 ft, compared to Phoenix at 1,000 ft.

They have turned Chase field into a neutral ballpark by installing a Humidor last year and a new artificial turf this year that plays slower than the rock hard infield they used to have.

So they can create a neutral environment in LV, just like they did in Phoenix.

It's all a far cry from an outdoor stadium at 5000 ft. elevation.

The question is, is the number they report > the number they create?

Next thing ya know, they'll be putting football and hockey teams there! Hell, they might as well hand out the Stanley Cup in Vegas...!

Legit books and sharps aren’t involved in point shaving. Why would you risk prison when you can make money without it?

When gambling is underground, the honest players cannot report the dishonest, cause they are both breaking the law.

I listened to a Freakonomics podcast on this daily gambling stuff, Draft Kings and FanDuel. It piqued my interest. But looking into it, it appears that the sites are dominated by pro gamblers, the sharks with big computer programs that mercilessly ruin the casuals. A real mug's game.

Las Vegas seems a poor fit for baseball in the fact that baseball is typically a regional sport, relying on RSNs, and there is basically nothing around Las Vegas but desert. So its a market the size of Kansas City, but without even the cities around KC that make their RSN as valuable as it is (which isn't much).

Yeah, Vegas is a bad spot for a baseball team for a whole host of reasons. But of course this is about blackmailing Maricopa County into building them a new stadium, not actually moving to an implausible alternative.

Diamondbacks will remain in Arizona, but Las Vegas is being undersold here.
Las Vegas Aviators in Summerlin led the minors in attendance this year. Admittedly attendance was improved by a new stadium, the best food, beer and Giada frose in baseball, and significantly for the locals, a change in affiliation from the Mets to the A's.
Las Vegas is a tourist town. Casinos would buy a significant number of seats, then package them to away team fans.
The heat index is higher in Atlanta, and I believe Phoenix is slightly hotter.

I was in Vegas in 2017 and went to a game at the old stadium. There were maybe 500 people there. So, this info, to me, is astonishing.
