Report: Mariners sign veteran OF AJ Pollock to 1-year deal

The Mariners have said this offseason that the goal was to add a right-handed-hitting outfielder with some thump. They’ve apparently done just that as ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports Seattle has signed veteran outfielder AJ Pollock to a one-year contract worth $7 million.

Pollock, 35, is an 11-year veteran who made his MLB debut in 2012 with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He made the 2015 All-Star Game while with Arizona and then spent the 2019-21 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Pollock was with the Chicago White Sox in 2022.

Pollock's had an interesting career. A late starter but he was quite good but not a thumper for his first few seasons. Then he was at least an above-average thumper but the overall results were substantially worse. The he had a big 2020 in both thumping and overall and carried some of that into 2021 too. Then last year he neither thumped nor hit. Between injuries and platooning and sometimes not thumping, he has never hit more than 21 HR in a season. Still a reasonable bet for a 100 OPS+ as 4th OF.

He's there to protect Kelenic and Trammell from ever facing a left handed pitcher ever, which if you do that and squint a little they begin to resemble major league hitters as long as you're not too picky about it
