Report: Rockies sign veteran OF Matt Kemp

Report: Rockies sign veteran OF Kemp
A day after outfielder Ian Desmond said he wouldn’t be participating in the 2020 season, the Colorado Rockies hope to have found a replacement. USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale reports the club has signed veteran slugger Matt Kemp to a minor-league deal.

Kemp, 35, played 20 games in the majors last season with the Cincinnati Reds before being released in early May. In 60 at-bats in 2019, Kemp hit .200 with a home run, five runs batted in and an OPS of .493.

Oh boy. Stop feeding the manager. At least with a season this shor Kemp won't get 500 PA.

Matt Kemp's only 35? I'm pretty sure I remember him playing in the 1981 World Series.

Kemp has always destroyed the Rockies: In just over a season's worth of games (178), he's hit .314/.365/.611, with 46 homers and 154 RBIs. I suspect that was in the back of the front office's mind when they signed him.

I'd much rather they found some 25-year-old AAAA type to DH for them, but since I don't think there's going to be a season at all, this doesn't bother me too much.

It is crazy a player who can hit but is as bad defensively as him has never signed with an AL club. I guess the NL has a DH this year though.

I know this isn't the plan, but taking Kemp and sticking him in CF in Coors would make for entertaining baseball. The Rockies' opposition might equal their 2019 runs scored total in 40% of the games.

Well, he hasn't been a particularly good hitter since 2014 at age 29. It's still surprising he wasn't slotted to an AL team but full-time DHs need to put up around a 125 OPS+ to hold a job ... but kinda by definition, even a 115 OPS+ DH has to be more valuable than a 115 OPS+ terrible LF so it's not entirely clear why NL teams kept taking a chance on him.

He may have the most ridiculous Rfield season of all-time -- rated at -37 in CF in 2010. I know Dunn has some bigger numbers but Kemp was just 25 and was still stealing 30 bases a year (but not that year when he was 19-15 so probably had some leg issues). It's hard to imagine he could really have been that bad although he did have many fewer putouts than in the year before or after.
