Report: Sandy Alcantara, Marlins near 5-yr. extension

The Marlins and ace Sandy Alcantara are nearing an agreement on a five-year contract extension worth north of $55 million, according to a report by SportsGrid’s Craig Mish. The club has not confirmed the report.

Alcantara is arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason, and he cannot become a free agent until after the 2024 season. If signed, this would mark the second extension the Marlins have completed so far this offseason. In October, Miami signed shortstop and unofficial captain Miguel Rojas to a deal that will keep him in South Florida through ‘23.

On Friday at the organization’s annual Home Plate Meals Thanksgiving Distribution, Alcantara mentioned that talks had been taking place over the past couple of weeks. He went on to say he was confident a deal would get done.

“I just want to be here for a long time,” Alcantara said. “If we get an agreement, I will feel blessed, because I want to be here for the rest of my life.”

If they sign him for 5/55 ish that’s a great deal. Why would he sign now if there’s a chance they one of his arb or more of his arb years goes away. Will he get a CBA opt out ?

He wouldn't and there isn't.

A quick PI search turns up seemingly reasonable "service-time" comps of Flaherty, Luis Castillo, Freeland, Marquez and Fulmer.

Flaherty -- $4 M in first year of arb
Castillo -- $4.2
Freeland -- $2.9 super-2, $5
Marquez -- 5/$43, 3 arb years, one FA year, $16M option ($2.5) (signed before 2019)
Fulmer -- $2.8 super-2 but missed all season, $2.8 (just 28 bad innings), $3.1, non-tender candidate this offseason

Signed 3 years later, if there are no options, then this is essentially an exact replica of Marquez's contract. Marquez made $24 in the arb years, and will total $56 if the option is exercised on the 2nd FA year. You'd expect some inflation ... maybe that's where the "north of $55 M" comes in. Castillo and Flaherty made a bit less than Marquez in his first arb year so it's not guarantee that Alcantara would do better.

Fulmer is an example of what can go wrong and why pitchers should only rarely pass up an offer like this. Fulmer needs a pretty big season to have much hope of ever seeing $55 M career earnings.

So we'll have to see how far north they go but this seems in line with the market.

Historically, "signing a contract with the Marlins through Year X" and "remaining in South Florida until Year X" have a tenuous correlation at best.

I don’t think Rojas has said that Jeter doesn’t deserve his gold gloves, so he’s reasonably safe

Yes, please. And keep away from speedboats.

Cardinals wish they could undo that Marcell Ozuna trade: they got two years of an OPS+ of 107 and terrible LF defense (total bWAR: 4.6 in 278 games) for $21M and they gave up Alcantara (26 years old now, and 4.1 bWAR in 2021) and Zac Gallen (26 years old now, 2.1 bWAR in 2021). Alcantara struck out 201 batters last year, and in 43 career starts for Arizona, Gallen has 274 Ks in 237 ip.

Meanwhile the Cardinals are featuring Dakota Hudson (career 6.9K/9) and Miles Mikolas (career 6.6K/9) in their rotation. Out of 217 active pitchers with at least 40 career starts, Mikolas has the 17th lowest K/9 and Hudson has the 28th lowest.

I guess those are the kinds of guys you might want in front of a great defense, but still, there's something to be said for missing bats.
