Report: Taylor Rogers agrees to three-year, $33-million deal with Giants

The San Francisco Giants have agreed to sign left-handed reliever Taylor Rogers to a three-year, $33-million deal, per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal on Friday.

Rogers will join his twin brother, Tyler, in San Francisco after splitting last season between the San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers.

Between the two clubs, the southpaw threw 64.1 innings with a 4.76 ERA while picking up 31 saves.

What in the world is going on with reliever deals this offseason?

You think they are high or low? To me, they don't seem all that different than the Hendricks/Iglesias/Pressly/Joe Kelly round of contracts and extensions from the recent past.

Yea, I feel like people say this every year, but the fact is, the market always goes up and teams are willing to pay for relievers with great K numbers.

And the contracts usually end up terribly for the team.

next target: Marlins P Trevor Rogers.

meanwhile, the parents of twins Taylor and Tyler clearly loathed these children - it's the only sane explanation for the names.

Can someone explain it to me? He's a tallish, durable lefty reliever who has nice peripherals and saved 31 games?

Rogers has been a negative FIP-defier since 2020 with mediocre run prevention results and his Statcast says he's pretty good at preventing hard contact but nothing special. They're not predictive, but his context-stats like WPA and re24 have been negative, too.

I don't understand this deal at all.

I'm with you. Has anyone ever been happy with a big contract to a non-elite reliever?

Cool?

Brewer fans pretty uneasy every time this guy pitched. Because he would have several times in a row looking great and then just get crushed. Gave up 3 earned runs or more in an inning 3 different times with the Crew in two months. And when it happened the pitches were not good pitches where you give credit to the hitter. Just ####### terrible pitch after pitch

And then next time he's throwing darts. So weird

1. These guys are all hall of famers apparently - they should get paid like hall of famers

Right? Worst gender reveal parties ever: all those unhelpful star-spangled cannons blasting red, white, and blue glitter everywhere and touching off hostilities with Mexico. Guests disclosed there was word of bad cherries and cucumbers going around, too.

You think they are high or low? To me, they don't seem all that different than the Hendricks/Iglesias/Pressly/Joe Kelly round of contracts and extensions from the recent past.

That prices for good relievers go up is not surprising.

Taylor Rogers had a 4.76 ERA last year. Over the last 3 years he has a 97 ERA+.

If you want to go with "he was pretty good once, let's gamble 1/$11" ... I'd probably still think it was high but I see logic. If you wanted to make him part of the 2/$17 brigade ... I'd still have my doubts but fine, at least it's consistently bad and maybe I need to adjust my idea of the market. But 3/$33? No way.

3 seaason prior to signing:

Hendriks 193 ERA+ (and he got elite money, much bigger than this)
Iglesias 142 (again much more money)
Pressly 155 (also more money)
Kelly 118 (but only signed for 2/$17)

Ottavino 124, 2/$14.5
Martin 141, 2/$17.5
Estevez 106, 2/$13.5

So yes, while I know why Ottavino, Martin and Kelly got the contracts they did, I don't get why Estevez, Strahm, Lugo (not shown) got roughly the same; so why would I understand why Rogers, whose numbers are not particularly better than Lugo, Strahm, Estevez much less Kelly, gets 3/$33?

Sure, awesome, his FIP the last 3 years is 2.86. Martin's is 2.69.

I will admit this is a better contract than Jim Crane's 3/$34.5 extension for Rafael Montero.

Wouldn't statheads of 5 to 8 years ago point to his 3.31 FIP and say he is better than that 4.76 ERA? Since 2018, his FIPs are 2.33, 2.85, 2.84, 2.13, and 3.31.

Has current stathead dogma flipped to where he gets criticized as a "negative FIP-defier"? Is ERA more important than FIP once again?

He also appears in a lot of games each season.

Basically, every free agent signing is a terrible overspend on a mediocrity.

Grateful that her parents drew the line at naming her “Fillmore”?

That's a reason to pick him up cheap, not to give him 3/33.

11….I saw what you just did there.

Maybe their fathers name was Jackson, or Buchanan?
